A local, opinionated ranking of the 15 Crete worth your trip: vibe, beaches, budget and who they suit, in one glance.

See a 7-day itineraryCheck ferry schedules

The Crete see roughly 7 million visitors a year and most of them crowd into Santorini and Mykonos in July and August. Pick the wrong island for your trip and you'll either pay double for a view you don't love, or miss the one that would have been perfect.

Here's how we rank the 15 islands we send readers to the most, by budget, vibe and who they suit. Every card opens a full local guide. If you're torn between two, skim both and trust your gut. We've never regretted picking the quieter island.

FAQ

Common questions

Which Crete island is the most beautiful?+

Depends what you find beautiful. Santorini is the obvious one. Nothing else in the world looks like that caldera at sunset. If you mean natural beauty without the filter, Milos has the best beaches and Folegandros has the best cliff-top village. Naxos wins for variety: beaches, mountains, farmland and villages in one island.

Which Crete should I visit first?+

For a first trip, most people do Santorini plus Mykonos because they're famous. We usually suggest Naxos or Paros instead of one of them. Paros has the best ferry connections, it's the smart hub. A good first-ever plan: Mykonos 2 nights → Paros 3 → Santorini 2. It saves a ferry leg and balances the intensity.

What's the least touristy Crete island?+

Sikinos, Anafi, Donousa, Iraklia and Schinoussa still feel genuinely quiet. No beach clubs, no cruise ships. Folegandros is remarkably calm for how photogenic it is. Amorgos gets a trickle of hikers and divers but never feels crowded. Avoid August if you want the empty feeling anywhere.

How many Crete can you visit in a week?+

Two or three, comfortably. More and you spend the holiday on ferries. Our most-booked seven-day plan: Mykonos 2 nights, Naxos 2, Santorini 3. On a tighter budget, swap Mykonos for Paros and save around 40% on hotels.

Paros or Naxos, which is better?+

Paros if you like to be out at night and hop to other islands; Naxos if you want to rent a car, hike and eat better for less. Locals tend to prefer Naxos. Paros wins the ferry game, it connects to eight-plus islands. Week-long trip? Do both. The boat between them is 30 minutes.

Best Crete for couples?+

Folegandros for real seclusion, Sifnos for the long-slow-dinner version of romance, Milos for drama and surprise. Santorini is the obvious answer but it rewards staying out of Fira (try Imerovigli or Pyrgos). Honestly a random Tuesday in Folegandros has beaten Santorini for most couples we've sent there.

Which Crete have the best beaches?+

Naxos for sand (Plaka is nearly 4km long), Milos for variety (around 70 beaches on one island, Sarakiniko is the famous one), Paros for windsurfing (Golden Beach, Pounda) and the Small Cyclades (Paleochora, Schinoussa) for pristine turquoise coves you walk to. Mykonos for the organised club scene.
