Why go to Lasithi
Lasithi is the easternmost of Crete's four regional units, centred on Agios Nikolaos and the turquoise Mirabello Bay. It holds some of Crete's most dramatic attractions: the Venetian island fortress of Spinalonga (inspiration for Victoria Hislop's The Island), the only naturally occurring palm forest in Europe (Vai), and the remote Minoan palace of Zakros.
Eastern Crete moves to a different rhythm. Beyond the luxury resort enclave of Elounda, the landscape becomes wilder and more remote: the Sitia mountains, the moonscape of Toplou Monastery, the dense palm grove at Vai, and the blue pools of Kato Zakros gorge.
Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, is built around the extraordinary Lake Voulismeni – a deep circular lake connected to the Aegean by a narrow channel. The town has a sophisticated, slightly bohemian atmosphere: art galleries, excellent fish restaurants and a lively harbour promenade.
Spinalonga island, a 10-minute boat ride from Plaka or Elounda, is one of the most visited sites in Crete. The intact Venetian fortress and the poignant history of its last inhabitants (the island was a leper colony until 1957) make it deeply moving.

Sophisticated harbour town on Lake Voulismeni
The capital of Lasithi is more sophisticated than typical Cretan resort towns. Lake Voulismeni (a bottomless volcanic lake) is the centrepiece – its 18th-century legend holds it was connected to the underworld. The harbour is lined with excellent fish restaurants and the Folk Museum is excellent.

Elounda
Luxury resort enclave – Greece's most exclusive address
Elounda is synonymous with ultra-luxury in Greece. The peninsula hosts the Elounda Beach Hotel and Elounda Mare – both among the most celebrated hotels in Europe. But even without staying at a mega-resort, the village has a pleasant seafront, good tavernas and the submerged ruins of Olous visible at low tide.

Kritsa
The most traditional Cretan village in Lasithi
Kritsa (10 km west of Agios Nikolaos) is a hilltop village of white cubic houses, traditional weavers' workshops and excellent tavernas. The Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, 1 km below the village, holds the finest Byzantine frescoes in Crete (13th-14th century).

Take the 10-minute boat from Plaka or Elounda to Spinalonga. The Venetian fortress and the haunting leper colony ruins take 1.5-2 hours. Last boats return around 18:00.

The most dramatic gorge walk in east Crete: 8 km through the "Gorge of the Dead" (named for cliff-face Minoan burial caves) to the Kato Zakros Minoan palace and beach. Arrange a return taxi from Kato Zakros.

Vai Palm Forest
Drive 95 km to the easternmost point of Crete. The palm grove behind the beach is Europe's largest natural Phoenix theophrastii forest. Arrive early – it fills up by midday.

- Lasithi has no major airport. Fly into Heraklion (HER) and drive 1h east, or into Sitia (JSH) – a small airport with limited seasonal flights.
- A hire car is absolutely essential in Lasithi. Public buses serve Agios Nikolaos and Sitia but not Vai, Zakros, Xerokampos or Kritsa villages.
- The road to Kato Zakros is excellent tarmac to Zakros village, then narrow but paved for the last 8 km to the coast.

Minoan Zakros (1600 BC)
The Palace of Kato Zakros was the fourth largest Minoan palace and the only one discovered unlooted – its storerooms still held imported obsidian, ivory and copper ingots when excavated in 1961. The site includes the dramatic "Valley of the Dead" gorge.
Elounda & Olous (100 BC)
The sunken city of Olous, now beneath the waters of the Elounda lagoon, was a prosperous Minoan and Hellenistic port. At low tide you can see mosaic floors beneath the surface. Elounda was built on the narrow isthmus connecting the Spinalonga peninsula to the mainland.
Venetian Spinalonga (1579-1715)
The Venetians fortified the Spinalonga island against Ottoman expansion – the last Venetian stronghold in Crete, holding out until 1715 even after the mainland fell. The complete fortifications still stand.
Spinalonga Leper Colony (1903-1957)
The last active leper colony in Europe, Spinalonga housed over 1,000 people at its peak. Conditions gradually improved and the last patient left in 1957. Victoria Hislop's novel The Island (2005) brought global attention to this history.

Money
- Elounda resort hotels charge €300-2,000/night. Budget travellers should stay in Agios Nikolaos (€60-100 for good hotels) and day-trip.
- Vai beach charges parking (€5). Spinalonga boat tickets: €10-15 return from Plaka or Elounda.
- Sitia is noticeably cheaper than Agios Nikolaos for food and accommodation.
Health and safety
- The Valley of the Dead gorge is 8 km one-way on rocky terrain. Proper shoes essential. No shade for long stretches.
- Xerokampos beach roads can damage car tyres – check your car hire agreement for off-road coverage.

What is Spinalonga and why is it famous?
Spinalonga is a small island in Mirabello Bay with a perfectly preserved Venetian fortress (1579). From 1903 to 1957 it was Greece's last active leper colony. Victoria Hislop's novel The Island made it one of the most visited sites in Crete. The 10-minute boat from Plaka or Elounda costs €10-15 return.
Is Vai beach worth the long drive?
Yes, but manage expectations: Vai is a good sandy beach plus the extraordinary spectacle of 5,000 wild Phoenix palms – the only naturally occurring palm forest in Europe. Go early (before 09:00) in July-August or you'll share it with hundreds. The drive through Sitia and Toplou adds excellent stops.
What is the Valley of the Dead gorge?
The Gorge of the Dead (Farangi Nekron) is an 8 km gorge near Kato Zakros named after the Minoan burial caves in its cliff faces. It ends at the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros and a small pebble beach. One of the most dramatic gorge walks in Crete – less crowded than Samaria.
Is Lasithi more expensive than the rest of Crete?
Elounda is the most expensive area in Crete (ultra-luxury resorts). But Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and the village areas are mid-range and often cheaper than Chania. Lasithi as a whole is quieter and less commercial than the western regions.
