Why go to Sitia
Sitia is the main town of the far east of Crete, 70 km east of Agios Nikolaos (about 1h 15m) and 2h 15m from Heraklion airport, with its own small airport (JSH) and a ferry port. The town has a long sandy beach, a harbour promenade of tavernas and the Venetian Kazarma fortress above it. Around it are Vai palm beach (24 km), Toplou monastery (15 km), the Minoan palace of Zakros with the Valley of the Dead gorge (40 km), the windsurfing beach at Kouremenos and the Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark.
Sitia is the town that tourism largely passed by. It has a harbour, a long beach, a university department, a Saturday market and 9,000 residents who work in olive oil, wine and raki rather than hotels. The promenade fills with local families every evening; visitors are guests rather than the main event.
The reason to base here is the country around it. Vai, the only native palm forest in Europe, is 24 km north-east; Toplou, the fortified monastery with its famous icons, is on the way; the Minoan palace of Zakros sits at the bottom of the Valley of the Dead gorge on the east coast; and the beaches at Kouremenos, Xerokambos and Erimoupolis are among the emptiest on Crete.
The whole east is a UNESCO Global Geopark, and Sitia's olive oil carries a PDO label. The town's archaeological museum holds the Palaikastro Kouros, an ivory Minoan figurine that is one of the finest objects found on the island.

Minoan east (Zakros, Palaikastro)
The east held the fourth Minoan palace, Zakros, a trading post for Egypt and the Levant, and the town of Palaikastro, where the ivory Kouros was found. Both are unrestored and quiet.
Kazarma (13th c.)
The Venetian fortress above the harbour, "Casa di Arma", is what survives of the walled town, which earthquakes and Barbarossa's raid of 1538 destroyed. It hosts summer concerts.
Toplou (15th c.)
The fortified monastery inland from Vai resisted pirates, Ottomans and Germans; its icon "Great Art Thou, O Lord" by Ioannis Kornaros (1770) is one of the masterpieces of Cretan painting.
Vitsentzos Kornaros
The poet of the Erotokritos, the epic of Cretan literature, was born in Sitia around 1553. His statue stands on the harbour front.
