Sitia is a coastal town in Lasithi at the eastern end of Crete. Choose it for a town-based stay with a harbour and access to the wider Sitia area. It has its own airport and passenger port, so confirm the arrival code and location before comparing journeys described only as an arrival in Crete.

Give the town a day of its own
Begin with the waterfront, then decide whether to include the Archaeological Museum or the Kazarma fortress. The municipality identifies these as separate cultural stops. Check their current opening arrangements and the walking approach instead of assuming a single ticket or a completely level route.
A central room can suit evenings on foot, while a property outside town may work better with a car. Ask about the final approach, parking and the specific beach access. A listing labelled Sitia can refer to the wider area rather than a room beside the harbour.
Distinguish Sitia airport from Heraklion
Sitia’s airport uses the code JSH. It is a different airport from Heraklion HER, with a different onward journey. Check the actual airline itinerary before paying for accommodation or a transfer. Give a driver the airport code, arrival details and the property’s map pin.
For a ferry arrival, use the port and boarding information on your ticket. The municipality describes links with other Aegean destinations, but a connection list is not a dated timetable. Check the sailing and any onward road transport together, including what happens after a late arrival.
Choose a Vai and Toplou outing or a Zakros day
The official Sitia Geopark routes link the Palaikastro area with Vai and Toplou. Use those route descriptions to understand the geography, then decide which stops fit your time and transport. A mapped loop is not a promise that every attraction or facility is open.
Treat the Zakros area as another outing rather than adding it automatically to a full beach day. For any gorge walk, check the start, finish and collection plan. Take water and suitable shoes, and follow local restrictions at protected beaches and walking areas.
Make an eastern-Crete base work for your route
Compare Sitia with Agios Nikolaos or Elounda using the places you actually want to visit. A stay focused on Vai and the far east has different road requirements from one centred on Spinalonga. Avoid choosing a room solely from its straight-line distance on the map.
Consult KTEL for current bus connections if you will not drive, including the return from rural stops. Where a bus does not fit the day, compare an organised excursion or a written transfer quote. Leave time for the town between outings rather than repeating a long cross-island journey each day.
Questions before you book
Is Sitia airport the same as Heraklion airport?
No. Sitia uses JSH and Heraklion uses HER. Confirm the code on your flight itinerary and use that airport when requesting a transfer.
Are Vai and Toplou inside Sitia town?
No. They are outings in the wider eastern-Crete area. Plan transport and the return separately from a walk around Sitia’s waterfront.
Can I arrive in Sitia by ferry?
Check a dated search and the operating company’s information for your route. Sitia’s passenger port has Aegean connections, but their operation depends on the sailing date.
Do I need a car for a Sitia stay?
A central stay can support walking in town. For wider excursions, compare actual bus times with a rental car, tour or transfer and check the final return.
