Questions before you book
Planning a trip around Crete.
Answers to the decisions that shape your route, base and arrival.
- Choose from your priorities: Chania for the harbour city and western outings; Rethymno for its old town and surrounding villages; Heraklion for Knossos and museums; Lasithi for Mirabello Bay and eastern Crete. Choose your exact overnight base after plotting your main visits.
- Put your arrival, return journey and must-see places on the map. One base works when your outings stay nearby. If your plans span opposite ends of Crete, compare a second overnight base with the effort of moving luggage and checking in again.
- The four regions are on the same island, so ordinary journeys between them are planned by road. Local boats serve particular coastal routes and offshore sites. A visit to Spinalonga or a boat journey to Loutro is a separate part of the itinerary, with its own departure and return arrangements.
- Compare available flights to Chania (CHQ), Heraklion (HER) and Sitia (JSH) with your exact accommodation address. Check the flight actually offered for your dates, the onward journey and your return departure before deciding. The closest airport on a map may not offer the flight you need.
- Start with your planned outings. A town stay can include walking and public transport; scattered villages, remote beaches or multiple bases need a separate transport plan. Check current bus services, tour meeting points and accommodation parking before choosing a rental or transfer.
- Choose the season around your main activities, then check local conditions close to the day. Gorge access, boat departures and beach conditions can change with weather or restrictions. Use current notices and the operator’s arrangements alongside a seasonal guide; climate averages are not a forecast.
