Hora Sfakion is the harbour village commonly called Sfakia on Crete’s southwest coast. The wider Sfakia area includes other settlements, so check the address when booking a stay. Its useful distinction is road access combined with coastal boats: you can arrive by road and continue towards places without one.

Stay near the harbour or elsewhere in Sfakia
A harbour-area room can make an early boat departure easier. Ask where luggage can be unloaded, how far the room is from the actual quay and whether reaching it involves steps. A listing using the wider Sfakia name may require another road journey.
Build in time for a waterfront meal and a village walk instead of using the harbour only as a hurried interchange. If you are leaving a rental car while staying elsewhere, confirm parking arrangements and take what you need overnight. Check the hire terms before planning any vehicle carriage.
Plan Loutro around the return boat
Loutro has no road connection. ANENDYK lists it within the southwest-coast boat network; use the operator’s dated timetable to check the actual departure, return and any change of vessel. A route shown on a map does not establish a sailing on your chosen day.
Confirm whether your ticket is a single crossing, a return or a longer outing. Ask about boarding with pushchairs or mobility needs. Leave room for a changed sailing plan and avoid connecting the final return directly to an airport check-in you cannot miss.
Treat Samaria as a separate hiking decision
Agia Roumeli, at the coast below Samaria, also has no road connection. Reaching it by boat gives you a different day from the full gorge descent. Choose the intended walk first and check the park’s current access notices, weather restrictions and your group’s ability.
A full traverse needs transport at both ends. Establish where your car stays and how you return before buying separate parts of the journey. Wear suitable walking shoes and carry water; a boat ticket does not include a guide or prove that the gorge is open.
Cross from the north coast with a realistic margin
Chania airport, Chania city and the ferry port at Souda are distinct starting points. Give a transfer provider the correct arrival location and exact destination in Hora Sfakion. Compare the current KTEL service with a rental car or arranged transfer rather than assuming a direct airport bus.
The road journey crosses inland terrain before reaching the south coast. Allow time for stops, luggage and the walk to the quay when connecting to a boat. If the sea prevents sailing, have a road-accessible alternative for the day and contact your accommodation about revised arrival arrangements.

Does a boat to Agia Roumeli include the Samaria hike?
No. A crossing and a gorge visit are separate arrangements. Check park access, the intended route and transport at both ends.
Can I return from a boat trip and fly the same evening?
Assess the final sailing and road transfer with a substantial margin. Weather changes can disrupt the boat leg, so an overnight buffer is worth considering for an important flight.
