Balos is the postcard image of Crete: a wild lagoon of white sand and electric-blue water cradled between the Gramvousa peninsula and a rocky islet. The shallow, brilliantly coloured shallows and the Venetian fortress of Gramvousa nearby make it one of the most photographed spots in Greece.
How to get there
Two options: a daily cruise boat from Kissamos port (the easiest, often combined with Gramvousa island), or a rough 8 km dirt road from Kalyviani followed by a 20-minute downhill walk to the sand. The dirt track is passable in a normal car with care, but the boat is more comfortable in high summer.

Frequently asked questions
Boat or drive to Balos?+
The cruise from Kissamos is the most relaxed and usually includes a stop at Gramvousa island. Driving is cheaper and more flexible but involves a rough dirt road and a 20-minute walk down (and back up).
Is there shade at Balos?+
Very little. Bring a sun umbrella, plenty of water and reef-safe sunscreen — there are only a couple of small canteens.
