Elafonissi is the most famous beach in Crete — a shallow, lagoon-like stretch on the island's far southwest tip where crushed shells tint the sand pink and the water rarely rises above waist height. A protected Natura 2000 reserve, it pairs warm turquoise shallows with low dunes and a small islet you can wade across to.
How to get there
Elafonissi sits about 75 km (1h45m drive) southwest of Chania town on a winding mountain road via Chrysoskalitissa Monastery. A daily KTEL bus runs from Chania in summer, and seasonal boats sail from Paleochora. A hire car is by far the easiest option; arrive before 10:00 to beat the crowds and the heat.

May, June, September and early October give you warm water and far fewer people than the July–August peak. Afternoons can get windy.

Frequently asked questions
Is Elafonissi sand really pink?+
Yes — the colour comes from crushed pink coral and shells. It is most vivid in patches near the waterline and after waves churn up fresh shell fragments.
How long does it take to drive from Chania?+
About 1 hour 45 minutes (75 km) on a scenic but winding road. Allow extra time in peak season for parking.
Is Elafonissi good for children?+
Excellent — the lagoon is shallow and calm for a long way out, making it one of the safest swimming beaches in Crete for small kids.
