Seven days is enough to cross Crete from the Venetian harbour of Chania in the west to the palm beach of Vai in the east — provided you rent a car and base yourself in two or three towns rather than packing a new hotel every night. This itinerary keeps drives under three hours, front-loads the famous west-coast beaches, and leaves the Minoan sites for the middle of the week.
How to use this plan
Crete is one island, not an island-hopping circuit. Treat it as a linear road trip: fly into Chania (CHQ), drive eastward through Rethymno and Heraklion, and fly home from Heraklion (HER) or Sitia (JSH). An open-jaw flight saves you from doubling back.
Day 1 — Chania old town
Arrive, collect your rental car, and settle into the Venetian quarter. Walk the harbour to the Egyptian lighthouse, eat at a taverna in the Splantzia district, and adjust to island time. See the Chania region guide for neighbourhoods and parking.
Day 2 — Balos & Gramvousa
Drive west for the lagoon at Balos (4x4 track plus a short walk, or a boat from Kissamos) and the Venetian fortress islet of Gramvousa. Turquoise shallows, pink-tinged sand, no shade — bring water and an umbrella.
Day 3 — Elafonisi & Falassarna
Two of Crete's best beaches in a day: the pink-sand shallows of Elafonisi in the morning and the long sunset sands of Falassarna in the late afternoon.
Day 4 — Samaria Gorge (or Imbros)
Hike Europe's longest gorge: 16 km downhill from the Omalos plateau through the Iron Gates to Agia Roumeli, then a coastal ferry to Sougia or Chora Sfakion. Short on time or travelling with kids? Swap in the gentler Imbros Gorge (8 km). Check the hiking guide for season and logistics.
Day 5 — Rethymno
Drive east (about an hour) to Rethymno, the best-preserved Renaissance old town in Greece, crowned by the huge Fortezza. Detour inland to Arkadi Monastery. Overnight here.
Day 6 — Heraklion & Knossos
Continue to Heraklion: the Palace of Knossos in the morning before the heat, then the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to see the frescoes and the Phaistos Disc in context. See the Heraklion guide.
Day 7 — Lasithi: Elounda, Spinalonga & Agios Nikolaos
Finish in the east around Mirabello Bay: a boat to the fortress island of Spinalonga, lunch in Elounda, and a wander around Agios Nikolaos. Fly out of Heraklion, or push on to Sitia and Vai if you have an evening flight.
Practical notes
- Driving: Crete's national road runs along the north coast; the south and mountains are slower but spectacular.
- Where to stay: two bases (Chania for nights 1–4, then Rethymno or Heraklion) minimise packing. Compare options in the best hotels guide.
- Best months: May, June, September and early October for warm sea and thinner crowds — see best time to visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a car for this Crete itinerary?
Yes. Public buses connect the main north-coast towns, but beaches like Balos, Elafonisi and Falassarna and the gorge trailheads are far easier with a rental car. Reserve early for July and August.
Should I fly into Chania or Heraklion?
For a west-to-east route, fly into Chania (CHQ) and out of Heraklion (HER). An open-jaw ticket avoids backtracking across the island.
Is 7 days enough to see Crete?
Seven days covers the western beaches, one gorge, the Minoan sites and eastern Lasithi at a comfortable pace. To add the south coast (Matala, Preveli) or the far east (Vai, Sitia) in depth, plan 10 days.
