Why go to Paleochora
Paleochora is a small town on a narrow peninsula on the south-west coast of Crete, 77 km from Chania (about 1h 30m). It has a long sandy beach (Pachia Ammos) on the west side, a pebble beach (Chalikia) on the east, and the ruins of the Venetian castle of Selino at the tip. Summer boats run to Elafonissi (1 hour), Sougia and Agia Roumeli, and the E4 coast path and the Anidri gorge start at the edge of town. It is the most relaxed base in western Crete.
Paleochora grew around a Venetian castle on a spit of land between two bays, and the town still fits on that spit: a grid of streets with tavernas, a few hotels and rooms, and a beach at the end of every road. In the evening the main street closes to cars and the tables move outside.
The town has kept a long-stay, slightly alternative crowd since the 1970s. People come for weeks, walk the coast path, take the boats along the coast, and settle into one taverna. Families like the sandy western beach; couples and hikers like the pebble side and the villages inland.
From the harbour, summer boats reach Elafonissi's pink lagoon in an hour, avoiding the drive and the car park, and continue east to Sougia, Agia Roumeli and Chora Sfakion. Inland, the Anidri gorge drops to Gialiskari beach and the village of Azogires hides under plane trees.

- KTEL buses from Chania run three or four times a day (1h 45m) via Kandanos. The last bus back is early evening.
- Chania airport is about 1h 45m by car. A taxi costs around €110-130; hire cars are cheaper for a week.
- Summer boats to Elafonissi, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Chora Sfakion and Gavdos leave from the harbour; buy tickets the day before in August.

Castle Selino (1282)
The Venetians built the fortress on the tip of the peninsula in 1282 to control the Selino district. Barbarossa destroyed it in 1539; the ruined walls are the town's viewpoint.
A fishing settlement
The modern town grew in the 19th century as a fishing and farming settlement under the castle, exporting olive oil and citrus from the Selino valleys.
Boats before roads
Until the road from Chania was surfaced, Paleochora depended on the sea; the coastal ferry line to Sougia, Agia Roumeli and Sfakia is the descendant of that traffic.
Alternative Crete (1970s)
Travellers priced out of Matala found Paleochora in the 1970s and the town kept its laid-back, long-stay character while the north coast built resorts.

Money
- Paleochora is one of the cheapest bases in western Crete; rooms and apartments are plentiful outside August.
- Taverna meals are €12-16 per person; the pedestrian-street restaurants are slightly dearer than the beach tavernas.
- The Elafonissi boat is about €20-25 return, cheaper than a day's car hire plus parking.
Health and safety
- Paleochora has a health centre; the hospital is Chania (1h 30m).
- The west beach has rip currents in strong west wind; swim on the east side those days.
- The Anidri gorge and coast path are exposed; hat, water and shoes.
Local manners
- The town is quiet by 1am; music bars close early by Cretan standards.
- Gialiskari's eastern cove is part-naturist; the town beaches are not.
- Azogires and Anidri are villages: greet people and buy something in the kafeneio.
