Ten days lets you slow down: add the wild south coast, an extra gorge, and the far east that most one-week visitors miss. This plan still runs west to east so you never retrace your route.
Days 1–3 — Chania & the west
Base in Chania. Day trips to Balos/Gramvousa and to Elafonisi/Falassarna, with an evening in the old harbour. Full detail in the Chania guide.
Day 4 — Samaria Gorge
The classic 16 km descent to Agia Roumeli and a coastal ferry along the Libyan Sea.
Day 5 — Sfakia & the south coast
Drive over the mountains to Chora Sfakion and Loutro (reachable only by boat or on foot). Quiet pebble coves, fresh fish, and the slow rhythm of the south.
Day 6 — Preveli & Plakias
The palm-lined river mouth of Preveli and the laid-back beaches around Plakias, then on to Rethymno.
Day 7 — Rethymno
The Renaissance old town and Fortezza, with an inland detour to Arkadi Monastery. Overnight in Rethymno.
Day 8 — Heraklion & Knossos
Knossos early, the Archaeological Museum after, and a stroll along the Heraklion waterfront and market.
Day 9 — Matala & the Messara
South to Matala's carved caves and the Minoan palace of Phaistos, returning over the plain of Messara.
Day 10 — Lasithi: Elounda, Spinalonga, Vai
Finish around Mirabello Bay — Spinalonga by boat, lunch in Elounda — or push east to the palm forest beach of Vai near Sitia before flying home.
Tips for the longer trip
- Spread accommodation over three bases (Chania, Rethymno/Plakias, Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos).
- Carry cash for small south-coast villages and beach canteens.
- Mix one big hike (Samaria) with a gentle one (Imbros or Agia Irini) — see the hiking guide.
