Balos and Elafonissi are Crete’s two most famous lagoons — both turquoise, both crowded in August, but very different days out. Use this comparison to pick (or sequence) them on a west Crete trip.
How to get there
Balos: boat from Kissamos or dirt road + walk. Elafonissi: ~1h45 drive from Chania or summer bus / Paleochora boat. Doing both in one day is rushed — better on consecutive days with a hire car based in Chania or Kissamos.
Best time to visit
Late May–June or September. If you only have one lagoon day in peak summer, start at sunrise for Balos viewpoint or Elafonissi parking.
Facilities
- See individual beach pages
- Balos: limited shade
- Elafonissi: more organised
- Both: paid parking / boat tickets

Frequently asked questions
Balos or Elafonissi for families?+
Elafonissi — shallower, softer access, more facilities. Balos involves a boat or a hot walk and has less shade.
Which is more photogenic?+
Balos from the hill viewpoint is the classic postcard. Elafonissi wins for pink sand and wading between islets.
Can I visit both in one day?+
Possible but exhausting (3+ hours driving plus queues). Split across two days if you can.
