Hiking in Rethymno: Imbros Gorge and Pachnes Summit Guide (2026)
Rethymno is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in Crete, from lush green gorges to the high-altitude mountain deserts of the White Mountains. If you want to explore the outdoors, here are two must-do hikes starting from Rethymno.
1. Imbros Gorge: The Family-Friendly Alternative to Samaria
If you want a scenic gorge hike without the exhausting 16 km descent of Samaria Gorge, Imbros Gorge is the perfect choice. This 8 km walk winds through a dramatic, narrow canyon with towering limestone walls that rise up to 300 meters high.

- Distance: 8 km (mostly downhill)
- Time needed: 2.5 to 3 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate (family-friendly)
- Highlight: The narrowest part of the gorge, which is only 1.6 meters wide!
To make the most of this hike, you can join a guided tour with KTEL transport and a traditional Sfakian pie lunch. Check out the Imbros Gorge Guided Tour on our directory.
2. Pachnes Summit: Conquering the White Mountains
For experienced hikers looking for a challenge, Pachnes is the highest peak in the White Mountains (Madares) at 2,453 meters. The hike starts from the unique mountain desert, a barren moon-like landscape of limestone cones and deep craters.

- Distance: 6 km (round trip from the trailhead)
- Time needed: 3.5 to 4 hours of walking (plus 4x4 transfer time)
- Difficulty: Challenging (high altitude)
- Highlight: Panoramic views of both the Aegean Sea and the Libyan Sea from the summit.
Due to the remote location, reaching the trailhead requires a 4x4 vehicle. We recommend booking a guided excursion that includes 4x4 mountain transfer. View the Pachnes Summit Guided Hike details to learn more.
What to Pack for Rethymno Hikes
- Sturdy Hiking Shoes: The trails are rocky and uneven; flip-flops or open sandals are not allowed.
- Plenty of Water: Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person. There are no water springs inside Imbros Gorge.
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential, especially for the exposed Pachnes peak.
