Archanes
A beautifully preserved wine village 14 km south of Heraklion with Minoan roots (the royal burial site of Fourni) and an excellent cooperative winery. Sunday market, traditional kafeneion and easy hike to Mount Giouchtas summit (legend: Zeus tomb).
Zaros
Cool mountain village at the foot of Psiloritis with natural springs, a scenic lake and fresh trout restaurants. Trailhead for the Rouvas Gorge (best gorge hike in Heraklion prefecture) and nearby Vrondisi Monastery with a 15th-century fountain.
Anogia
Fierce, proud village on the northwest slopes of Psiloritis. Famous for traditional music (birthplace of Nikos Xylouris), weaving workshops and its role in Cretan resistance (the village was burned twice by the Nazis). Start point for the Nida Plateau and Ideon Cave (mythical birthplace of Zeus).
