Things to Do in Heraklion, Crete (2026)
Heraklion is built around some of Greece most important cultural assets. Give it at least two full days: one for Knossos and the museum, one for the city itself and a winery or south-coast beach trip.
1. Knossos Palace
The largest Minoan palace (c. 2000 BC) and most visited archaeological site in Greece after the Athens Acropolis. Open daily 08:00-20:00 (reduced in winter). Entry 15 euros; combined ticket with the Archaeological Museum 20 euros (book online at culture.gr). Hire a licensed guide (15 euros extra) - the site complexity demands explanation.
2. Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Arguably the greatest single museum in Greece: the only place on Earth where the full arc of Minoan civilisation (3,500 BC to 1,100 BC) can be followed room by room. Key exhibits: snake goddesses, Phaistos Disc, bull-leaping fresco, Minoan jewellery, the Akrotiri gold. Open daily 08:00-20:00; entry 10 euros.
3. Koules Fortress and Venetian Harbour
The 16th-century sea fortress at the harbour entrance has been beautifully restored. Climb to the roof for harbour views. The adjacent Venetian arsenali (shipyards) are being developed into a cultural centre.
4. 1866 Market Street
The covered market running south from Lion Square. Olive oil, cheeses, herbs, nuts, raki and local produce at better prices than tourist shops. Go on a Tuesday or Thursday morning.
5. Peza Wine Tour
The Peza PDO wine zone (15-25 km south of Heraklion) produces exceptional Vidiano whites and Liatiko reds. Lyrarakis winery and Douloufakis winery both offer estate tours and tastings with advance notice.
6. Matala and Phaistos Day Trip
Combine the Phaistos Minoan palace (the second largest, 60 km SW) with Matala beach (15 km further) - a superb full-day drive through the Messara Plain.
