Chania is the jewel of western Crete: a romantic Venetian harbour lined with colourful mansions, a covered market hall bursting with local products, and some of the most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean – Elafonissi, Balos and Falassarna – within 90 minutes' drive.
Standing on the waterfront of Chania's old harbour at dusk, the 16th-century Venetian lighthouse glows amber against a darkening sky while the scent of grilled octopus drifts from the tavernas behind you. This is western Crete at its finest.
The city itself rewards slow walking: Venetian mansions converted into boutique hotels, Ottoman fountains still trickling in hidden courtyards, and the magnificent Agora market hall where you can buy wild sage, aged graviera cheese and pressed olive oil from the same family stalls that have traded here for generations.
Beyond the city, the Chania prefecture packs in extraordinary geography – Europe's longest gorge (Samaria), the pink-tinted lagoon of Elafonissi, the wild Gramvousa peninsula that frames Balos, and the rugged White Mountains that rise to 2,453 m above sea level.

The old town clusters around the Venetian harbour and the Kastelli hill. Wander Zambeliou and Kondylaki streets for the densest concentration of boutiques, wine bars and Cretan jewellery studios. The Agora market hall on the edge of the old town is essential.

Platanias

Platanias is a dual personality: a packed sandy beach strip by the sea and a beautifully preserved medieval village (Ano Platanias) on the hillside above. The church of Agios Georgios has sweeping views across the Cretan Sea.

Kissamos (Kastelli)
Quiet port town – gateway to Balos & Gramvousa
Kissamos is a relaxed working-port town with a good Archaeological Museum and a long pebbly beach. Its real value is logistical: the ferry to Balos and Gramvousa island departs from here, and it's the nearest town with services to both Balos and Falassarna beaches.

Paleochora
Double-sided beach peninsula on the south coast
Built on a narrow peninsula between a sandy western beach and a pebbly eastern beach, Paleochora has a lively, backpacker-friendly vibe. A ruined Venetian castle crowns the peninsula tip. Boats run to Elafonissi, Sougia and Agia Roumeli from here.

Europe's longest gorge: 18 km from Omalos plateau to the sea at Agia Roumeli. Open May-October. Buses from Chania to Omalos depart at 06:15 and 07:30 in summer.

Daily boat from Kissamos port combining Balos lagoon and the Venetian fortress of Gramvousa island. Departs 10:00, returns 18:00. Book in advance in July-August.

Elafonissi Beach

- Rent a car in Chania city – KTEL buses serve the main towns but beaches like Balos and Elafonissi are difficult without wheels.
- The road to Elafonissi is fully paved (75 km, 1h 45m). The road to Balos is a rough 8 km dirt track – a regular car can do it carefully, but the boat from Kissamos is easier.
- Chania airport (CHQ) is 15 km east of the city; taxis cost €20-25. Airport buses run hourly.

From Kydonia to La Canée
Minoan Kydonia (2000 BC)
One of the three great Minoan cities of Crete, Kydonia occupied the hill of Kastelli. Excavations have uncovered Linear B tablets and fine Minoan pottery beneath the modern city streets.
Venetian La Canée (1252-1645)
Venetians rebuilt the city as a major naval base, constructing the great harbour, the lighthouse, the arsenali (shipyards) and the imposing city walls – most of which still stand.
Ottoman Hanya (1645-1898)
The Ottoman conquest added mosques, hammams and the distinctive Küçük Hasan Mosque at the harbour – now an exhibition space. The two cultures fused to create the layered city visible today.
Battle of Crete (1941)
The first major Allied airborne operation in history was fought over the skies of Chania and Maleme. The Allied War Cemetery at Souda Bay honours 1,527 Commonwealth soldiers.

Money
- ATMs are plentiful in Chania city, Platanias and Kissamos. Bring cash for small village tavernas and beach parking.
- Parking at Elafonissi costs €5; at Balos trailhead €5. Both fill up before 10:00 in July-August.
- Mid-range taverna meal: €12-18 per person with wine. The Agora market is best for provisions.
Health and safety
- The Samaria Gorge hike requires good footwear – proper trail shoes, not sandals. Carry 2 L of water minimum.
- Elafonissi and Balos have no shade. Bring a beach umbrella; UV index 8-10 in July.
- Nearest hospital: Chania General Hospital (Venizelion), +30 28210 22000.
Local manners
- Dress modestly when visiting Chrysoskalitissa Monastery near Elafonissi (shoulders and knees covered).
- Cretan hospitality is genuine – accept the complimentary raki and fruit that taverna owners often bring after a meal.
- Sunday mornings in village squares are for coffee and backgammon. Join in.

How do I get to Chania from Athens?
Fastest: 45-minute flight from Athens International (ATH) to Chania (CHQ) – Aegean, Sky Express and easyJet serve the route. Budget option: overnight ferry from Piraeus (8h 30m) with Anek Lines or Minoan Lines, arriving refreshed at Souda port 3 km from Chania city.
How many days do I need in Chania?
3 days covers the Old Town, Samaria Gorge and one major beach (Elafonissi or Balos). 5 days lets you explore Falassarna, the south coast villages and the White Mountains at a relaxed pace. A week with a car unlocks everything.
Is Elafonissi really pink?
Yes – the colour comes from crushed pink coral and shell fragments. It's most vivid in the shallow patches near the water's edge and after waves. The islet you wade across to has the most concentrated pink sand.
Can I do the Samaria Gorge without a guide?
Yes – the trail is well-marked and open to self-guided walkers (ticket €5 at the gate). You walk 18 km one-way from Omalos to Agia Roumeli, then take a boat to Sougia or Chora Sfakion and a KTEL bus back to Chania. Allow 5-7 hours.
When is the best time to visit Chania?
May-June and September-October are ideal: sea temperatures above 22°C, fewer crowds than July-August, and Elafonissi and Balos are manageable. July-August is peak season – very hot, very crowded at beaches, and prices 30-50% higher.
Do I need a car in Chania?
For the city alone, no – Chania Old Town is compact and walkable. But to reach Elafonissi, Balos, Falassarna and the mountain villages a hire car transforms your experience. Rent from €30-45/day from local agencies around the airport.
