Why go to Sfakia
Sfakia is the mountainous south-west of Chania prefecture and Chora Sfakion is its small port, 74 km from Chania (about 1h 30m) over the White Mountains. It is the base for the Imbros Gorge, the coastal ferries to Loutro, Agia Roumeli (end of the Samaria Gorge), Sougia and Paleochora, the Venetian castle and long beach at Frangokastello, and Sweetwater beach on the coast path. Loutro, 15 minutes by boat, has no road and no cars.
Sfakia is Crete at its steepest. The road from Chania climbs over the Askifou plateau and drops through switchbacks to Chora Sfakion, a harbour village of white houses, tavernas and the ferry quay. Sfakians are famous in Crete for independence, feuds and the Sfakian pie; the region was never fully controlled by Venice or the Ottomans.
Almost everything here is reached on foot or by boat. The Imbros Gorge walk ends 5 km east of the port; the Samaria Gorge ends at Agia Roumeli, which has no road, so hikers take the coastal ferry back to Chora Sfakion; and Loutro, the horseshoe village 15 minutes west by boat, has never had a road at all.
Sfakia rewards more than a gorge-day stopover. Frangokastello's castle and shallow beach are 14 km east, Anopoli and the Aradena gorge bridge are up the mountain, and the coast path west from the port passes Sweetwater beach on its way to Loutro.

A small harbour village with a dozen tavernas, rooms above them, the ferry ticket office and a pebble beach at each end. The bus from Chania and the boats from the gorges all meet here.

Bus or taxi to Imbros village, walk 8 km down the gorge to Komitades, then a taxi or a 5 km walk to Chora Sfakion. Open all year; €2.50 entry.

Early bus to Omalos, 16 km down to Agia Roumeli, swim, then the afternoon ferry to Chora Sfakion (1 hour). May to October only.

Getting to Sfakia and getting around
- KTEL buses from Chania to Chora Sfakion run two or three times a day (1h 45m) and connect with the gorge and ferry timetables.
- The coastal ferries (Chora Sfakion, Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sougia, Paleochora, Gavdos) run daily from April to October; buy tickets at the quay kiosk.
- Parking in Chora Sfakion is limited in July and August; arrive early or park at the top of the village.

Anopoli and Daskalogiannis
Anopoli, above Chora Sfakion, led the 1770 revolt against the Ottomans under Daskalogiannis, who was flayed alive in Heraklion. The Sfakian reputation for resistance starts here.
Frangokastello (1371)
The Venetians built the castle on the plain east of Sfakia to control the coast. In 1828 Hatzimichalis Dalianis and 385 Cretans died defending it; the "drosoulites", ghostly figures seen at dawn in May, are said to be them.
Evacuation of 1941
After the Battle of Crete, Allied troops retreated over the mountains to Chora Sfakion and were evacuated by the Royal Navy from the harbour over four nights. A memorial stands on the quay.
Loutro
Ancient Phoenix, the winter port of Anopoli, and a Byzantine and Venetian harbour. Its horseshoe bay has no road; supplies still arrive by boat.

Money, health, manners and what changed this year.
Money
- Rooms in Chora Sfakion and Loutro are cheap by Crete standards; Loutro fills first, so book ahead.
- Harbour taverna meals are €12-16 per person; a Sfakian pie is €4-6.
- Ferry fares: Loutro €6-7, Agia Roumeli €12-13, Paleochora €20-25 one way.
Health and safety
- The nearest health centre is in Chora Sfakion (basic); the hospital is Chania, 1h 30m.
- Gorges: proper shoes, 2 litres of water, start early. Imbros has shade; Samaria has little after noon.
- The coast path is exposed and rocky; not for sandals, and not in the midday heat of August.
Local manners
- Sfakia is proud and traditional; greet people, ask before photographing, and respect the memorials.
- Gunfire at weddings and festivals is a local custom; it is not aimed at you.
- Loutro has no cars and little electricity noise; keep it that way after dark.

- Samaria Gorge opens on 1 May and closes at the end of October, weather permitting; check the forest service notice.
- The last ferry from Loutro to Chora Sfakion leaves around 6pm; miss it and you stay the night.
