Imbros is a gorge walk in the Sfakia area of western Crete. The usual downhill route starts near Imbros village and finishes in the Komitades area, not at the ferry quay in Chora Sfakion. Arrange collection from the actual exit before starting.

Route and effort

The Region of Crete describes an approximately 8 km crossing through narrow rock passages. Allow enough time for your party, stops and the remaining walk to the agreed pickup point. A published walking time is an indication, not a deadline every visitor will meet.

Wear footwear suitable for uneven stone and carry drinking water, snacks and sun protection. Prolonged downhill walking can be tiring even on a shorter gorge route. Check the weather and local advice before entering; a general year-round destination listing does not guarantee safe access after rain or during a warning.

Where the gorge finishes

Save the entrance and exit as separate points. The lower exit is near Komitades and the coastal road; Chora Sfakion lies farther west. Do not plan a ferry connection on the assumption that you finish within the harbour village or that a bus stops at the footpath.

For a hired car, decide whether collection from the exit, an arranged driver or a return transfer works best. Ask where the vehicle will wait, how you make contact and what happens if your walk takes longer. Obtain the actual price and party capacity in advance.

Buses and admission

Check Chania–Rethymno KTEL for the dated service, the stop serving Imbros and the practical onward arrangement. A bus travelling toward Sfakia does not automatically stop at every gorge access point, and the timetable must leave enough walking time.

Confirm admission and parking conditions at the trailhead. Missing prices in a destination article do not mean either is free. An organised tour may charge separately for entrance or return collection, so compare the total and inclusions.

Imbros or Samaria?

Read the Samaria planning guide before choosing by distance alone. Both outings need conditions appropriate to the walkers. A child’s age or a description such as easy does not establish suitability for a particular family.

Combining Imbros with Sfakia

A meal or a coastal stop may fit after the walk if transport and daylight allow. Sfakia’s guide introduces the wider area. Keep an alternative plan for poor weather or a delayed finish. An outing that ends at a comfortable time is more useful than adding an extra ferry or beach solely because it looks nearby on a map.
