Why go to Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi prefecture and the main town of eastern Crete, 64 km east of Heraklion (about an hour by car). The centre wraps around Lake Voulismeni, a 64-metre-deep lake joined to the harbour by a short canal, with cafes and restaurants on the water. Boats leave the harbour for Spinalonga, three beaches sit inside the town, and Kritsa village, the frescoed church of Panagia Kera and ancient Lato are 15 minutes into the hills.
Agios Nikolaos is the one resort town on Crete that is still a town first. It has a courthouse, a market, a hospital, a fishing fleet and 12,000 residents who live here all year, and the tourism sits on top of that rather than replacing it.
The lake is the centre of everything. Legend says it is bottomless; in fact it is 64 metres deep, fed by a spring and connected to the harbour by a canal dug in 1870. The cafes around it are where the town meets for coffee in the morning and drinks after dark.
From the harbour, boats cross Mirabello Bay to Spinalonga, the Venetian fortress island that was Europe's last leper colony until 1957. Inland, Kritsa is one of the largest traditional villages on Crete, and the church of Panagia Kera beside it holds the island's best Byzantine frescoes.

The lake and harbour
Cafes on the water, the heart of town
Lake Voulismeni is ringed by cafes and restaurants, with the harbour on the seaward side of the bridge. It is busiest at sunset and after 10pm. Boats for Spinalonga and the bay leave from the harbour quay.

Kritsa

Ten kilometres inland, Kritsa is a village of 2,000 people with a weaving tradition, tavernas and the church of Panagia Kera on the road below it, whose 13th-14th-century frescoes cover every wall. Ancient Lato is 3 km beyond.

Boats leave the harbour from 9am, cross Mirabello Bay in about an hour and give you 1-2 hours on the island. Take the audio guide; the leper colony story is the point of the visit.

From Lato to the lake
Lato (7th c. BC)
The Dorian city of Lato above Kritsa was one of the most powerful in eastern Crete. Its port, Lato pros Kamara, stood where Agios Nikolaos is today. The hillside ruins are the best-preserved Dorian city on the island.
Venetian Mirabello
The Venetians built the castle of Mirabello on the headland in the 13th century and gave the bay its name. The castle was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1645; the name survived.
The canal (1870)
The Ottoman governor had the canal dug to join the stagnant lake to the sea. It turned a marsh into the harbour-side centre of the modern town, refounded in the same decade by families from Kritsa and Sfakia.
Spinalonga
The Venetian fortress island at the mouth of Elounda bay housed a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. It is now the most visited archaeological site in eastern Crete.

- Agios Nikolaos is mid-priced. Hotels behind Kitroplateia are the best value; the lake-front restaurants charge a premium for the view.
- Spinalonga boat trips are €15-25 from the harbour plus the €8 island entry fee.
- The Wednesday street market on the main road is the cheapest food shopping in the east.
Health and safety
- The general hospital is in the town, the only one in eastern Crete.
