01Why go to Ierapetra
Why go to Ierapetra
Ierapetra is the southernmost town in Europe, on the south-east coast of Crete, 36 km from Agios Nikolaos and about 1h 30m from Heraklion airport. It is a working town of 12,000 with a Venetian fortress (Kales) on the harbour, an old Ottoman quarter of narrow lanes, a long sandy town beach and boat trips to the protected island of Chrissi. The villages of Myrtos (west) and Makrigialos (east) have the quieter beaches, and the town has the mildest winter climate in Greece.
Ierapetra is not a resort. It is the market town of the south-east, surrounded by the greenhouses that grow much of Greece's winter tomatoes and cucumbers, with a harbour, a fortress and a beach that runs the length of the seafront. Tourism is a layer on a town that works all year.
The old quarter, Kato Mera, behind the harbour keeps its Ottoman street plan, a mosque with a minaret and the house where Napoleon is said to have spent a night in 1798 on his way to Egypt. The Venetian fortress of Kales guards the harbour mouth and is open to walk around.
The main reason many visitors come is Chrissi, the flat, uninhabited island 15 km offshore with cedar trees, white sand and shallow turquoise water. Boats cross from the harbour in about an hour. Access has been restricted since 2022 to protect the island, so check the current rules before you plan the day.
“Ierapetra gets more sunshine than anywhere else in Greece. In November you can still swim here while Chania is under rain.”

Hierapytna: the city that faced Africa
Hierapytna
The ancient city was the most powerful in eastern Crete by the 2nd century BC and the last to fall to Rome in 67 BC. Roman Hierapytna had theatres, baths and an aqueduct; most of it lies under the modern town.
Kales fortress
The Venetians built the harbour fort in the 13th century and rebuilt it in 1626. It is small, square and open to visitors; the walls give the best view of the town and the Libyan Sea.
Ottoman Kato Mera
The old quarter grew under Ottoman rule with a mosque, a fountain and narrow lanes. Napoleon is said to have slept in a house here on 26 June 1798 while his fleet sailed to Egypt.
Greenhouse boom
From the 1960s, plastic greenhouses turned the plain around Ierapetra into the vegetable garden of Greece. The town grew rich on tomatoes rather than tourism, which is why it kept its character.

09Practical tips
Practical tips
Money, health, manners and what changed this year.
Money
- Ierapetra is one of the cheapest bases on Crete: town hotels from €50-70 in high season and taverna meals at €10-15 per person.
- Chrissi boats cost around €25-30 return; the island has no facilities so bring everything.
- The Saturday market on the ring road is the place for fruit, vegetables and honey.
Health and safety
- The town has a general hospital, the only one on the south coast of Lasithi.
- The south coast is 2-4 degrees hotter than the north; July and August afternoons need shade and water.
- Chrissi has no shade beyond the cedars and no water; heatstroke is the usual problem there.
Local manners
- This is a working town. Shops close for siesta, tavernas are full of locals, and English is less universal than in the resorts.
- The mosque in Kato Mera is a monument, not an active mosque; the minaret is visible from the harbour.
- Chrissi is a Natura 2000 site: stay on the paths, take rubbish home, no camping.
New this year
- Chrissi island access is regulated with daily visitor limits and marked zones; check the current rules with the boat operator before booking.
- Several town hotels and Myrtos guesthouses stay open all winter, which is rare on Crete.
- The Kales fortress is open daily in summer with free entry; hours shorten in winter.
10Ierapetra questions, answered
Ierapetra questions, answered
Why is Ierapetra called the southernmost town in Europe?
At 35°N it is the southernmost town on Crete and therefore in Greece and the European mainland-and-islands. Only Gavdos island, further west, lies further south, and it is a village not a town.
Can I still visit Chrissi island?
Yes, but with restrictions. Since 2022 daily visitor numbers are capped, visits are limited to marked areas, and sunbeds and camping are banned to protect the cedar forest and dunes. Boats leave Ierapetra harbour in the morning; book ahead and check the current rules.
Is Ierapetra good in winter?
It has the mildest winter climate in Greece, with daytime temperatures around 17°C and more sunshine than anywhere else on Crete. Some hotels stay open all year, the town functions normally, and swimming is possible on calm days into November.
How far is Ierapetra from Heraklion airport?
About 100 km, 1h 30m by car via Agios Nikolaos. By KTEL bus it is around 2h 30m with a change in Agios Nikolaos.
Which beaches are near Ierapetra?
The long town beach along the seafront, Myrtos village beach 15 km west, Makrigialos 25 km east (the best for families), and Chrissi island offshore.
Is Ierapetra touristy?
Much less than the north coast. It is a market and farming town where tourism is a small part of life, which suits travellers who want a real town with cheap hotels, warm sea and gorges and villages nearby.
