Best Beaches in Lasithi, Crete (2026)
Eastern Crete beaches range from the extraordinary (Vai palm forest) to the supremely remote (Xerokampos, accessible only on rough roads). The Mirabello Bay coastline around Agios Nikolaos has excellent organised beaches; the east coast is almost untouched.
Vai Beach - Europe Only Palm Forest
5,000 native Phoenix theophrastii palm trees behind a sandy beach at the eastern tip of Crete. Unique in Europe. Gets very crowded July-August. Go early or in May/September. Paid parking (5 euros), sunbeds, seasonal canteen. 95 km east of Agios Nikolaos via Sitia.
Voulisma Beach (Istron)
10 km north of Agios Nikolaos near Istron. Blue Flag, fine sand, calm Mirabello Bay water. Best organised beach near the Lasithi capital. Water sports, sunbeds, taverna. Excellent for families.
Xerokampos
Three pristine sandy coves on the far south coast of Lasithi, accessible by rough unmade road from Ziros village. No facilities. Almost no one there outside July-August. One of the last unspoiled beach areas in Crete.
Kato Zakros Beach
At the bottom of the Valley of the Dead gorge: a small pebble-sand beach at a fishing hamlet, overlooked by the Minoan palace site. Perfect ending to the gorge hike.
Almyrida and Milatos
On the north coast of Lasithi, west of Agios Nikolaos: quieter and less developed than the Heraklion resorts. Milatos Cave nearby (famous for the 1823 massacre during the Greek revolution).

Is Vai beach worth the long drive?
Yes - the palm forest is genuinely unique in Europe and the beach is good. Factor in the drive through Sitia and Toplou Monastery for a full day. Go in May, June or September to avoid peak-season crowds.
