Things to Do in Lasithi (Eastern Crete) 2026
Eastern Crete rewards exploration more than any other part of the island. Its attractions spread across a large area and the best experiences - Spinalonga, Valley of the Dead, Vai - require a car and a willingness to drive.
1. Spinalonga Island Fortress
Take the 10-min boat from Elounda or Plaka (10-15 euros return). The complete Venetian fortress, Ottoman-era buildings and the haunting leper colony (1903-1957) make this a 2-hour immersive visit. Read Victoria Hislop The Island first.
2. Valley of the Dead + Kato Zakros Palace
8 km gorge walk from Zakros village to the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros and a beach. The cliff-face Minoan burial caves are extraordinary. Allow 5-6 hours total; arrange a return taxi.
3. Vai Palm Forest
5,000 native palms behind a sandy beach at the eastern cape. Unique in Europe. Best May-June and September.
4. Toplou Monastery
Fortress monastery 12 km north of Sitia. The Great Is the Lord icon (1770) is the finest piece of 18th-century Cretan religious art.
5. Agios Nikolaos and Lake Voulismeni
Walk the harbour promenade, visit the Folk Museum, swim at Kitroplatia beach (10 min walk from centre), have a long lunch at a harbour fish restaurant.
6. Elounda Salt Flats and Submerged Olous
Walk the Elounda causeway across the salt flats to the Spinalonga peninsula. At low tide, submerged mosaic floors from ancient Olous are visible 1-2 m below the clear water.
