Villages in Lasithi, Eastern Crete - Local Guide 2026

Eastern Crete villages are less visited and more authentic than the west. Kritsa is justly famous for its Byzantine church; the eastern villages near Sitia and Zakros are genuinely off the tourist trail.

Kritsa

10 km west of Agios Nikolaos. The Byzantine church of Panagia Kera (1 km below the village) has the finest 13th-14th century frescoes in Crete. The village itself has traditional weavers workshops and good kafeneions.

Sitia

Quiet port town on the northeast coast with a Venetian Kazarma fortress, a small archaeological museum and excellent local wineries (Sitia PDO). The annual Sultana Festival (August) celebrates the region raisin production.

Ierapetra

Southernmost city in the EU. Full of authentic working-town energy: a Venetian fortress, a Napoleon-slept-here legend, excellent fresh fish, and boat access to the uninhabited Gaidouronisi island (Chrysi - crystal-clear water, cedar forest).

Zakros

Quiet village 8 km above Kato Zakros - the start of the Valley of the Dead gorge walk. Excellent family taverna (Akrogiali) at the gorge entrance.

Absolutely - Panagia Kera (4 euros entry) is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Greece. Combine with the ancient city of Lato (3 km above Kritsa, free, spectacular mountain views) for a superb half-day.
