Why go to Rethymno
Rethymno sits between Chania and Heraklion and is often called the most beautiful city in Crete. Its Venetian-Ottoman old town – one of the best-preserved in Greece – wraps around a small Venetian harbour overlooked by the massive Fortezza castle.
Rethymno rewards slow exploration. Its old town lanes are tighter and more authentically residential than Chania's – you'll find locals hanging laundry between minarets and Venetian loggias, and kafeneions where old men play tavli under ancient stone arches.
The Fortezza, a 16th-century Venetian fortress on the headland above the city, is one of the best-preserved in the eastern Mediterranean. Walk the walls at sunset for sweeping views of the old town, the Aegean and the mountains behind.
South of Rethymno, the foothills of the Ida Mountains conceal remarkable destinations: the Preveli palm forest and beach (one of the most cinematic in Greece), the Arkadi Monastery (a symbol of Cretan resistance), and a string of traditional villages making exceptional wines.

Rethymno Old Town
Venetian loggia, minarets, lighthouse harbour
The old town is compact enough to explore on foot in a morning but rich enough to fill several days. Key sights: the Fortezza, the Archaeological Museum inside the fortress, the Rimondi Fountain, and the Loggia. The harbour lighthouse is one of the most photographed in Crete.

Plakias
Low-key resort with a great beach – base for Preveli
Plakias is a relaxed village on the south coast with a long sandy beach and easy access to Preveli beach (8 km). It attracts independent travellers who want good swimming, hiking in the surrounding gorges and none of the mass-tourism noise of the north coast.

Spili
Mountain village with the famous lion-head fountain
Spili sits in a cool mountain valley 25 km south of Rethymno. Its central plateia has a magnificent Venetian fountain with 25 lion-head spouts all pouring fresh spring water. Good for lunch and stocking up on local honey and cheese before heading to Preveli.

Arkadi Monastery
Crete's most sacred site of resistance
Built in the 16th century and famous for the 1866 massacre-sacrifice, Arkadi is one of the most visited and emotionally powerful sites on Crete. The Baroque facade of the church is exquisite. It's 23 km southeast of Rethymno and easy to combine with a drive into the Ida foothills.

Ancient Rithymna
An independent city-state in the Classical period, Rithymna minted its own coins and had its own harbour. The Minoan settlement beneath the modern city is still being excavated.
Venetian Rethymo (1210-1646)
Under Venice, the city acquired its defining character: the Loggia, the Rimondi Fountain, the Porta Guora gate and the massive Fortezza fortress completed in 1590.
Ottoman Resmo (1646-1898)
The Ottomans added minarets to existing churches and built the Neratzes Mosque (now a concert hall). The blend of both cultures makes Rethymno's skyline unique in Greece.
Arkadi Monastery & Cretan Independence
In 1866, the abbot of Arkadi Monastery gave the order to blow up the powder magazine rather than surrender to Ottoman forces – a defining moment in the Cretan independence movement.

Money
- The Venetian harbour tavernas charge 20-30% more than those one block inland. Walk into the old town side streets for better value.
- Preveli charges a small parking fee (€3). Arrive before 09:30 in July-August.
- The Wednesday market at Rethymno sells the best local produce at village prices.
Health and safety
- The Kourtaliotiko gorge walk to Preveli involves some steep stone steps. Sturdy footwear required.
- Preveli beach has a strong undertow after mid-afternoon when the Meltemi wind picks up.

Is Rethymno worth visiting or should I just go to Chania?
Rethymno's old town is arguably better-preserved and less commercialised than Chania's harbour. It's also better positioned for day trips to Preveli, Arkadi and the Ida foothills. Visit both if you can – they're only 1h 15m apart.
How do I get to Preveli Beach?
Drive south from Rethymno on the Spili road to Asomatos, then follow signs to Preveli (38 km total, ~50 min). A 15-minute descent on a stone path takes you to the river mouth and beach. Alternatively, kayak from Plakias. The route via Koxare through the Kourtaliotiko gorge is equally spectacular.
What is the Fortezza and how long does it take?
The Fortezza is a large Venetian fortress (1573) on a headland above Rethymno old town. Allow 1-1.5 hours to walk the walls and visit the Archaeological Museum inside. Entry €4. Open daily 08:00-18:00 (until 20:00 in summer).
When is the Rethymno Wine Festival?
Usually the last week of June to early July, held in the Municipal Garden. Entry is free and includes unlimited wine tasting from Cretan wineries. Dates vary – check the Rethymno municipality website in May.
