Why go to Agia Pelagia
Agia Pelagia is a small cove resort 23 km west of Heraklion, about 20 minutes from the airport. The village curves around a sheltered bay with calm, clear water, a sandy beach lined with tavernas and hotels stepping up the hillsides on both sides. Smaller coves at Ligaria, Psaromoura and Mononaftis are a short walk or drive away. The painter El Greco's birthplace, Fodele, is 10 km inland.
Agia Pelagia is the closest calm bay to Heraklion airport, which makes it the natural first or last night of a Crete trip and a good base for anyone who wants Knossos and the museum within half an hour but not the city.
The bay faces north-west and is protected by two headlands, so the water is usually flat even when the meltemi is blowing on the open coast. The beach is sand with some pebbles, the tavernas put their tables on it, and the water is clear enough for snorkelling off the rocks at either end.
Behind the village a valley runs inland to Fodele, a village of orange groves and a Byzantine church where Domenikos Theotokopoulos, El Greco, was born in 1541. The coast road west continues to Bali and Rethymno; east it reaches Heraklion in 25 minutes.

- A taxi from Heraklion airport costs about €35-40 and takes 20-25 minutes. Pre-booked transfers are similar.
- KTEL buses from Heraklion run several times a day in summer but not late at night; a car or taxi is more practical.
- The village is steep. If you have mobility issues, choose a hotel at beach level, not on the headlands.

The bay is named after the small monastery of Agia Pelagia that stood above it. A Minoan settlement and a Hellenistic town (Apollonia) are recorded on the headland; finds are in Heraklion.
Fodele and El Greco
Fodele claims Domenikos Theotokopoulos, born 1541, who trained as an icon painter in Crete before Venice and Toledo. A small museum in the village and the 11th-century church of the Panagia mark the connection.
Fishing village
Until the 1970s a handful of fishing families lived here; the tavernas on the sand are their descendants. The first large hotel opened on the northern headland in the 1970s.
Airport proximity
The national road cut the drive to Heraklion to 25 minutes, and Agia Pelagia became the airport-side resort for the west of the prefecture.

Money
- Agia Pelagia is mid-priced: quieter and slightly dearer than Hersonissos, cheaper than Elounda.
- Beach taverna meals are €15-20 per person with fish; Fodele is cheaper.
- Boat hire is around €80-120 a day plus fuel for a small motorboat.
Health and safety
- There is a pharmacy in the village and clinics in Heraklion; the hospital is 30 minutes.
- The bay is calm but the coves outside it get swell; check conditions before snorkelling off the western rocks.
- Steps and heat: carry water on the way back up to the hillside hotels.
Local manners
- The church of the Panagia in Fodele is a working church; dress modestly inside.
- The fishing boats in the bay are still working boats; keep swimmers clear of the small jetty in the morning.
- Tavernas here close by midnight; it is not a nightlife resort.
