Why go to Hersonissos
Hersonissos is the largest resort on the north coast of Crete, 26 km east of Heraklion and about 30 minutes from the airport. The harbour strip has the bars, hotels and boat trips. The beaches run west to Anissaras and east to Stalis. The old villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos sit on the hill above with the best tavernas. Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau and Cretaquarium are all within 40 minutes by car.
Hersonissos (Limenas Hersonissou, "the port of Hersonissos") grew from a fishing harbour into the main package-holiday town of Crete in the 1970s. The seafront road runs for about two kilometres past hotels, bars, mini-markets and boat-trip touts, and in July it is as busy as any resort in Greece.
The version most visitors miss is uphill. Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos are three stone villages ten minutes' walk above the coast road, with tavernas in courtyards, a folk museum and views over the bay. Most locals who work in the resort live up here.
The town works as a base because everything is close: Heraklion airport in 30 minutes, Knossos in 35, the Lasithi Plateau in 45, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda in under an hour. Two water parks, a golf course and the Cretaquarium at Gournes fill the days that are not beach days.

Harbour and Beach Road
The strip: bars, hotels, boat trips
The seafront road is where the bars, clubs and most hotels are. Boats leave the small harbour for Dia island and sunset cruises. It is loud at night in July and August and calm in May and October.

The prettiest of the three hill villages, ten minutes on foot above the coast road. Restored stone houses, small squares and a dozen tavernas with views over the bay. Book a table at sunset in summer.

Folk museum and village pace
Piskopiano keeps a small Museum of Rural Life in a 19th-century olive mill and a handful of tavernas around the church. It is the quietest of the three villages and the closest to the Crete Golf Club.

Quieter beaches west of town
West of the harbour the coast breaks into small sand-and-rock coves at Anissaras, then the sandy family beach of Analipsi. Hotels here are larger and calmer; Cretaquarium and the Gournes beaches are a short drive further west.

Knossos Palace
The Minoan palace is 35 minutes west, 5 km short of Heraklion. Arrive at 8am opening in summer; by 11am the tour buses fill the site. Combine with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Cretaquarium
Greece's largest aquarium at Gournes, 10 km west, with Mediterranean species in 60 tanks. A good half day when the meltemi makes the beach unpleasant.

Lasithi Plateau and the Dikteon Cave
Drive 45 minutes up through the Seli Ambelou pass to the plateau ringed by mountains. The Dikteon Cave at Psychro, the mythical birthplace of Zeus, is a 15-minute uphill walk from the car park.

Boat trip to Dia island
Boats from Hersonissos harbour cross to the uninhabited island of Dia for swimming stops and a barbecue. Best in June and September when the sea is calm.

Acqua Plus, in the hills 5 km south of town, has the bigger slides and a lazy river; Star Beach on the seafront is free to enter with paid rides. Both open May to October.

Walk up from the coast road (15 minutes, or a €6 taxi) for dinner in a stone courtyard, then back down to the harbour bars if you want them.

Eat in the hill villages, drink on the strip
- Gamopilafo
- The Cretan wedding rice cooked in meat stock with staka butter. The Heraklion villages make the richest version.
- Kalitsounia
- Small cheese pies, sweet with honey or savoury with wild greens. Every bakery on the coast road sells them from 7am.
- Antikristo lamb
- Lamb slow-cooked upright around an open fire. Several tavernas above Hersonissos cook it on weekends; order ahead.
- Dakos
- Barley rusk with grated tomato, mizithra and olive oil. The safe test of any taverna: if the rusk is soggy, leave.
- Chochlioi boubouristi
- Snails fried in olive oil with rosemary and vinegar, a Cretan meze older than the Minoans.
- Raki with honey
- Rakomelo, warm raki with honey and cinnamon, is what the hill-village kafeneia pour after October.

- KTEL buses run between Heraklion and Hersonissos every 30 minutes in summer (about 45 minutes, €3-4). The airport bus stops at the main road, not the harbour.
- A taxi from Heraklion airport costs about €40-50 and takes 30 minutes. Pre-booked transfers are cheaper for families with luggage.
- You do not need a car for the resort itself, but you need one for Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau and the south coast. Rental offices line the main road.

Roman Chersonesos
The town was a Roman port with a theatre and a harbour fountain decorated with fish mosaics. The fountain remains stand by the harbour; part of the ancient mole is visible under the water in calm weather.
Early Christian basilicas
Two basilicas from the 5th and 6th centuries were built at Kastri, the headland east of the harbour. Their floor mosaics are the town's most important antiquities.
The villages above
For centuries the population lived in the hill villages, safe from pirates. Old Hersonissos was the parish centre; the harbour was a summer fishing camp until tourism reversed the pattern.
Lychnostatis
The Lychnostatis Open Air Museum on the eastern edge of town recreates a Cretan farmstead with windmills, a stone house, an olive press and gardens. It is the best place in the resort to see how rural Crete lived.

Practical tips
Money, health, manners and what changed this year.
Money
- Hersonissos is one of the cheaper bases on Crete outside July and August. Half-board deals in the large hotels west of town are good value in June and September.
- Bars on the strip charge €8-12 for cocktails; the hill-village tavernas charge €12-18 for a full meal per person.
- ATMs are everywhere on the coast road. Keep some cash for the village tavernas and beach sunbeds.
Health and safety
- The nearest public hospital is in Heraklion (30 minutes). Private clinics on the coast road handle minor injuries and speak English.
- The north coast meltemi wind blows hardest in July and August afternoons. Sunbeds face into it on the town beaches; Analipsi is more sheltered.
- Tap water is safe. Bottled water is €0.50 in mini-markets and €3 on the beach.
Local manners
- Dress up a little for the hill-village tavernas; swimwear on the coast road is normal, in Koutouloufari it is not.
- Sunday evening in Old Hersonissos square is for families and coffee. Loud groups are not welcome there.
- Tipping 5-10% in tavernas is appreciated and not expected.

How far is Hersonissos from Heraklion airport?
About 26 km east along the national road. A taxi takes 30 minutes and costs €40-50; the KTEL bus takes 45 minutes and costs a few euros but stops on the main road above the resort.
Is Hersonissos good for families?
Yes, if you choose the location carefully. The large hotels west of town at Anissaras and Analipsi are quiet and family-oriented with shallow beaches. The harbour strip itself is loud until 3am in July and August.
Hersonissos or Malia: which is better?
Hersonissos is bigger, with more hotels, more families and more day-trip options. Malia has the louder nightlife strip and a Minoan palace. Stalis, between them, is the calmest of the three.
Do I need a car in Hersonissos?
Not for the resort itself. For Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau, Agios Nikolaos and the south coast a car is much easier than the bus. Most visitors rent for two or three days rather than the whole week.
