Rethymno is sandwiched between two dramatically different coastlines: the long urban beach on the north coast and the wild, dramatic south coast with Preveli palm beach, Triopetra and the remote Agiofarango cove accessible only on foot.
Preveli Beach - The Palm Forest Cove
Preveli is the most cinematic beach in Crete: a river lined with Phoenix theophrastii palms (the only naturally occurring palm species in Europe) flowing through a gorge and opening into a sheltered lagoon at the sea. The combination of freshwater river pool and Libyan Sea salt water in one small cove is extraordinary. Access: 38 km south via Spili - drive to the Preveli Monastery car park and walk 15 min down a stone path. Alternative: kayak 8 km from Plakias. Facilities: seasonal canteen, sunbeds (limited), no shade on the beach itself.
Rethymno Town Beach - 12 km of Convenience
The town beach stretches 12 km east from the Venetian harbour. The western section near the lighthouse is the best: finer sand, closer to tavernas. Sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports facilities throughout. Blue Flag status. Perfect for families staying in the city who want a morning swim before sightseeing.
Triopetra - Wild Triple-Rock Beach
Triopetra (three rocks) is named for the three spectacular outcrops rising from the sea. Two adjacent beaches separated by a headland: one with a few sunbeds, one completely wild. Access: 60 km south of Rethymno via Agia Triada village - the last 4 km are rough track. Worth every bump.
Bali - The Prettiest North Coast Coves
Bali (35 km east of Rethymno) is a picturesque bay village with three small turquoise coves and a fishing harbour. Excellent for snorkelling. The village has developed into a quiet resort, but retains character. Easy day trip from Rethymno: 30 min drive on the E75.
Plakias - Long Beach and South Coast Base
Plakias is a low-key village on the south coast with a 1 km sandy beach and the best access point for both Preveli (8 km east) and the Kourtaliotiko gorge. Good independent-traveller infrastructure: kayak and snorkel hire, small hotels and apartments, excellent seafood tavernas.
