The Rethymno hinterland contains some of the most varied and beautiful villages in Crete - from the cool mountain air of Anogia on the flanks of Mount Ida to the ceramic workshops of Margarites and the serene south-coast fishing village of Plakias.
Spili - Mountain Village with the Lion Fountain
Spili (30 km south of Rethymno) has a magnificent central plateia with a 25-spout Venetian lion-head fountain pouring cold spring water. Excellent kafeneion, local cheese shops and honey stalls. Use as a lunch stop on the way to Preveli.
Margarites - The Pottery Village
Margarites (27 km east of Rethymno) has been producing hand-thrown pottery since ancient times. Over 20 active workshops line the village lanes. The traditional Cretan designs (pithari storage jars, oil lamps) are still made alongside modern pieces.
Anogia - Music, Weaving and Mount Ida
Anogia (50 km SE of Rethymno on the slopes of Psiloritis/Mount Ida) is famous for its traditional weavers, its distinctive music (the poet-composer Nikos Xylouris was born here) and its fierce independence. Base for climbing Psiloritis peak (2,456 m) and visiting the Ideon Cave (Zeus mythical birthplace).
Eleftherna - Ancient City and Wine
The ancient city of Eleftherna (30 km SE of Rethymno) was an important Dorian city and is still being excavated. The Museum of Ancient Eleftherna (opened 2016) is excellent. The local Eleftherna PDO wine zone produces interesting indigenous varieties.
