Things to Do in Rethymno, Crete (2026)
Rethymno offers a rare combination: an architecturally rich city to explore on foot, easy access to one of Greece most beautiful beaches (Preveli) and one of its most sacred sites (Arkadi Monastery) - all within 45 minutes of each other.
1. Climb the Fortezza
The 16th-century Venetian fortress on the headland above the city is the defining landmark of Rethymno. Walk the full circuit of the walls for panoramic views. The Archaeological Museum inside has a good Minoan and Hellenistic collection. Entry 4 euros. Open daily 08:00-18:00.
2. Walk the Old Town
The most authentically layered old town in Crete: Venetian mansions, Ottoman minarets, a Venetian lighthouse at the harbour mouth and the Rimondi Fountain still flowing in the square. Allow 2 hours. Key streets: Venizelou, Arkadiou and the lanes behind the Neratzes Mosque.
3. Preveli Beach and Gorge
Drive or kayak to the palm-fringed river cove of Preveli. Combine with a walk through the Kourtaliotiko gorge (7 km, 2.5 hours) for a full south-coast day. Start at Koxare village for the gorge walk.
4. Arkadi Monastery
23 km SE from Rethymno through olive groves and low hills. The 16th-century Baroque church is exceptional; the 1866 powder magazine where Cretan rebels chose death over surrender is deeply moving. Allow 1.5-2 hours.
5. Rethymno Wine Festival
Usually late June to early July in the Municipal Garden - free entry, unlimited wine from Cretan wineries, live music. One of the best free events in Crete.
6. Rethymno Renaissance Festival
Late July-August at the Fortezza. Theatre, music and dance performances inspired by the Venetian Renaissance period. Buy tickets in advance.
