Find the Archaeological Museum at Saint Francis.
The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno occupies the Venetian church of Saint Francis in the old town. It is not in the former building by the Fortezza entrance, which still appears in some older guides. Use the Hellenic Heritage listing for the current location, opening information and tickets. This is a useful indoor visit, with the journey between stops adjusted to the weather.

Plan an Arkadi and Eleutherna outing.
Arkadi Monastery is associated with the events of the Cretan Revolt of 1866. Allow time for its church, historical spaces and museum rather than only a photograph of the façade. The Museum of Ancient Eleutherna presents finds from the nearby ancient city. If combining them, check both opening days and the actual route; Margarites is a possible additional pottery-village stop if time permits.

Choose Preveli for a separate south-coast day.
Preveli Monastery and Preveli Beach are distinct visits with different entrances and walking involved. The monastery has two historical complexes; confirm which part you intend to visit. For the beach, examine the approach and the return climb before choosing it, particularly with young children or limited mobility. Check local access restrictions and weather, and leave enough daylight for the road journey back.

Spili offers a village square and fountain on a route toward the south. Argyroupoli is a different option around its village and springs. Anogia lies in the Psiloritis area and calls for a mountain-road plan. Select a small group of stops that fit your accommodation rather than treating all Rethymno villages as neighbouring sights.

Compare departures and walking before booking.
For a guided outing, confirm pickup at your actual location, the return point, guide language and entrance fees. Rethymno town and coastal accommodation outside town may have different arrangements. On a beach or boat day, check the weather-dependent parts and cancellation terms. A town-and-museum day is an alternative when an outdoor plan no longer suits conditions.
