Rethymno sits in the middle of the north coast motorway - perfectly positioned between Heraklion (60 km east) and Chania (60 km west). It has its own overnight ferry port from Athens and excellent bus connections.
By Ferry - Piraeus to Rethymno
ANEK Lines operates a direct overnight ferry from Piraeus (Athens) to Rethymno port, departing 20:00 and arriving around 06:00. Journey: 10 hours. Frequency: daily in high season, 4-5 times per week in low season. Fares from 35 euros deck class to 80 euros for a cabin. By Bus (KTEL) from Heraklion or Chania
KTEL express buses run between Heraklion and Rethymno every 30 minutes (journey: 1h 30m, fare 7.60 euros). From Chania: hourly buses (1h 20m, fare 7 euros). The Rethymno KTEL station is on the eastern edge of the city, a 10 min walk from the old town. Buses run from approximately 06:00-22:00 in summer.
By Car
Rethymno is on the E75/A90 motorway. From Heraklion: 60 km, 1h drive (or 45 min if you pay the toll section). From Chania: 60 km, 1h 15m. From Athens by car requires taking the ferry. Parking in the old town is scarce - use the free car park by the Fortezza (10 min walk to harbour) or paid parking at the new marina.
No Direct International Airport
Rethymno has no airport. The nearest is Heraklion (HER) 60 km east - from there, take the KTEL bus (1h 30m) or a taxi (65-80 euros). Alternatively fly to Chania (CHQ) 60 km west and take the KTEL bus (1h 20m). Car hire at either airport is strongly recommended if you plan to explore Preveli and south coast.
