Elafonissi - The Pink-Sand Lagoon
Elafonissi sits 75 km southwest of Chania on the island far tip. The pink tint comes from crushed coral and shell fragments mixed with white sand. The lagoon rarely exceeds waist depth, making it ideal for families. Drive 1h 45m via the mountain road through Chrysoskalitissa, or take the summer KTEL bus from Chania. Arrive before 10:00 in July-August to find parking. A car park fee of 5 euros applies. Sunbeds and a seasonal canteen are available; no shade - bring an umbrella.
Balos Lagoon - Wild Gramvousa Peninsula
Balos is the postcard image of western Crete: white sand meeting electric-blue shallows in a lagoon framed by the Gramvousa peninsula. The easiest access is by daily boat from Kissamos port (combining with the Venetian fortress of Gramvousa island). Alternatively, drive 8 km of rough dirt track from Kalyviani and walk 20 minutes down. No shade on the beach - take water. The most beautiful viewpoint is actually the hill above the car park, before you descend.

Falassarna is a 2 km sweep of golden sand 57 km west of Chania - one of the widest beaches in Greece. It faces due west, making it the best sunset beach in Crete. The northern end near the ancient Phalasarna ruins is quieter. Water sports (windsurfing, SUP) are available in the central area.
Seitan Limania - The Secret Fjord
Seitan Limania (Devil Ports) is a fjord-like inlet of intensely turquoise water hidden in white limestone cliffs, 25 km east of Chania near Akrotiri. Reach it by a 20-minute cliff walk from the car park - steep and exposed in places. The water is deep and crystal clear; no facilities. Avoid in heavy Meltemi wind. Not suitable for children or non-swimmers.
Stavros - Circular Bay and Zorba Beach
Stavros (15 km north of Chania) is a sheltered circular bay famous as the filming location of the final dance scene in Zorba the Greek. The bay is calm and sandy, shallow for a long way, and backed by a distinctive limestone rock face. Excellent for families. Small tavernas line the bay.
