1. Hike the Samaria Gorge
Europe longest gorge (18 km, open May-October) descends 1,200 m from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea. Allow 5-7 hours. Take the early KTEL bus (06:15 from Chania) to Omalos, walk to Agia Roumeli, then boat to Chora Sfakion and bus back to Chania. Entry 5 euros. Proper trail shoes essential.
2. Explore Chania Old Town and Venetian Harbour
The old town lanes around the Venetian harbour are best walked in the early morning or evening. 6. Drive the South Coast: Paleochora and Sfakia
The south coast of Chania prefecture is a different world from the north: wilder, quieter, reachable only by mountain roads. Paleochora (a double-beach peninsula) and Sfakia (Chora Sfakion, Loutro accessible only by boat or foot) are the highlights. Allow a full day.
7. Agia Triada Monastery and Akrotiri Peninsula
The Akrotiri Peninsula (15 km from Chania) has three remarkable monasteries: Agia Triada (working, 16th-century Venetian Baroque, produces excellent olive oil and wine), Gouverneto (further up the track) and the cave monastery of Katholiko.
