Explore the harbour and the streets of Topanas, Splantzia and Kasteli on foot. Leave time to stop rather than following a long checklist. The old harbour is a sightseeing area; it is not the Souda ferry terminal. For a short stay, build the day around the old town and one museum instead of adding a distant beach.

Chania’s Archaeological Museum is in Halepa, east of the historic centre. Use its current address when planning transport; older guides may still point to its former building on Halidon Street. Read the museum’s visitor information before going, especially for opening days, tickets and any access needs. This is a separate stop from a harbour walk.

Choose Balos or Elafonisi for a beach outing.
Balos lies in the northwest and Elafonisi in the southwest. Treat them as separate outings when planning from Chania. Balos can involve a boat from Kissamos or an unpaved approach followed by a walk; check both the operator’s actual itinerary and your rental terms. At protected Elafonisi, stay on permitted routes and leave sand, shells and plants in place.

Prepare properly for Samaria Gorge.
The usual full crossing goes from Xyloskalo near Omalos to Agia Roumeli, around 16 km including the final stretch to the coast. It is a long, rocky walk with a different finish point. Plan onward boat and road transport before starting, and check current NECCA notices and admission rules. Weather, fire risk and sea conditions can change the plan; a general season description does not confirm access on your date.

Explore villages or the south coast on another day.
Vamos and Gavalochori offer a route through Apokoronas. Hora Sfakion is a road-accessible base on the south coast, while Loutro requires a boat or a suitable walking route. Choose one area and allow for the return. These outings suit a slower day than trying to combine villages, a major gorge and several beaches.

Match a tour to your actual departure point.
Before booking, check the pickup zone, meeting time, walking involved, guide language and return point. Chania city, Souda and Kissamos are different departures. A listing for an attraction does not confirm pickup at every hotel, and a boat ticket does not automatically include road transport. Kedrodasos is a separate protected coastal visit with its own access, not overflow parking for Elafonissi. Around Akrotiri, compare Stavros, Kalathas or Marathi according to the day’s conditions. A south-coast trip to Sfakia or Paleochora needs a full return plan. A car can help, but a suitable dated tour or bus can change what you need.
