Why go to Malia
Malia, 34 km east of Heraklion, is two places sharing a name. Beach Road is the nightlife strip that fills with young groups from June to September. Ten minutes' walk south, the old town is a village of stone lanes, a church square and family tavernas. Three kilometres east, the Minoan Palace of Malia sits behind the protected dunes of Potamos beach.
Ask most Europeans about Malia and they will describe the strip: a kilometre of bars, clubs and fast food between the main road and the beach. It exists, it is loud, and from mid-June to early September it is one of the busiest nightlife scenes in Greece.
Walk ten minutes inland and the noise stops. The old town of Malia is a proper Cretan village with a church square, bougainvillea lanes and tavernas that have fed the same families for decades. Many long-stay visitors and older couples base themselves here and never see the strip.
The third Malia is the oldest. The Minoan palace east of town is the third largest on Crete after Knossos and Phaistos, and unlike Knossos it has not been reconstructed. Beside it, the sand dunes of Potamos beach are protected and undeveloped.

The nightlife strip runs from the main road down to the beach. Most bars open at 10pm and close at 4am from June to September. Hotels here are cheap and loud; do not book one expecting sleep.

Ten minutes uphill, the old town keeps its village life. The square by Agios Dimitrios church has three or four tavernas that fill with Cretan families on summer evenings. Rooms and small hotels here are quiet.

Potamos and the palace
Dunes, the river mouth and the Minoan site
East of the resort the coast road passes the archaeological site and reaches Potamos, a beach with dunes and a small river mouth. It is protected, so there are no hotels and few facilities.

A realistic day plan, in the order a local would do it.
Morning · 1-2 hours
Minoan Palace of Malia
Open from 8am; go early before the heat. The site is flat and unrestored, so a guidebook or the site app helps. The kernos and the storage magazines are the highlights.
Afternoon · 2-3 hours
Potamos beach
Walk from the palace car park onto the dunes. Bring water and shade; there is nothing here, which is the point.
Evening · 2 hours
Old town square
Dinner at one of the tavernas around Agios Dimitrios church, then a walk through the lanes. Arrive by 8.30pm in August to get a table.
Full day · 5-6 hours
Lasithi Plateau
The road south from Malia climbs to the plateau in 40 minutes. Loop the villages, visit the Dikteon Cave at Psychro, and eat at Tzermiado.

Sisi harbour
Drive or take the bus 8 km east to Sisi. Swim in the coves, then eat on the harbour as the fishing boats come in.

If that is why you came: bars open around 10pm, clubs fill after midnight, and the whole street closes around 4am. Keep valuables in the hotel safe.

Skip the strip; the old town square is where the food is

- A baked pie of courgette, potato and mizithra with mint. Old-town tavernas make it in summer when the courgettes are local.
- Lamb tsigariasto
- Lamb braised slowly in olive oil and its own juices until it falls apart. Order it with fried potatoes and horta.
- Dakos
- Barley rusk, tomato, mizithra and olive oil. The standard Cretan starter.
- Sfakianes pites
- Thin cheese pancakes with thyme honey, served as dessert in the village tavernas.
- Grilled octopus
- Best at the harbour tavernas in Sisi, sun-dried on the line in the morning and grilled at night.

- KTEL buses from Heraklion stop on the main road at the top of Beach Road every 30 minutes in summer. The journey takes about 50 minutes.
- Taxis from Heraklion airport cost around €50-60. Shared transfers are common for groups.
- The palace is a 40-minute walk east along the beach road or a 5-minute drive; there is a bus stop at the site entrance.

The Palace of Malia (1900 BC)
First built around 1900 BC and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1700 BC, the palace covered 7,500 square metres around a central court. The kernos, a round stone offering table with 34 hollows, still stands in place.
Chrysolakkos
The "gold pit" burial enclosure north of the palace produced the famous bee pendant, two gold bees holding a honeycomb, now in the Heraklion museum.
Venetian and Ottoman Malia
The old town grew in the Venetian period on the slope above the coastal plain, out of reach of pirates. The lanes and the church of Agios Dimitrios date from this time.
The strip (1980s onward)
Package tourism reached Malia in the 1980s. Beach Road was built on farmland between the old town and the sea, which is why the two feel so different.

Money, health, manners and what changed this year.
Money
- Strip hotels are the cheapest on Crete in June but their prices double in August. Old-town rooms are quieter and often cheaper than the strip in peak weeks.
- Drinks on the strip are €5-10; happy hours run until midnight. Old-town taverna meals are €12-16 per person.
- The palace entry is €6 and free on the first Sunday of the month from November to March.
Health and safety
- The medical centre on the main road treats the usual strip injuries; serious cases go to Heraklion (40 minutes).
- Alcohol plus midday sun is the main cause of hospital visits in Malia. Drink water, use shade after 1pm.
- The beach has lifeguards in July and August; the water shelves gently but the meltemi brings waves.
Local manners
- The old town is a residential village. Keep noise down after 11pm and cover swimwear in the square.
- Agios Dimitrios church is open in the mornings; shoulders and knees covered to enter.
- The palace is a protected site: no drones, no climbing on walls.

Is Malia only for partying?
No. The strip is one street. The old town, the Minoan palace, Potamos beach and the fishing village of Sisi are all quiet, and families and couples stay in the old town and at Stalis without noticing the nightlife.
How do I get from Heraklion airport to Malia?
By taxi in about 40 minutes (€50-60), by pre-booked transfer, or by KTEL bus from the airport stop to Heraklion bus station and then the Malia bus (about 50 minutes, every 30 minutes in summer).
Is the Malia palace worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you have seen Knossos. Malia was never reconstructed, so you see the original Minoan ground plan, the kernos offering table and the storage magazines exactly as excavated. Allow one to two hours.
What is Potamos beach?
The protected dune beach beside the archaeological site, 3 km east of the resort. No hotels, no sunbeds, a small river mouth and clear water. Park at the palace and walk.
When does the Malia nightlife season run?
The clubs open around mid-June and most close by the second week of September. In May and October Malia is a quiet beach village.
Malia or Hersonissos for families?
Hersonissos, or better still Stalis between the two. Malia's hotels are concentrated around the strip; the quiet family options are in the old town and at Stalis.
