Why go to Stalis
Stalis (Stalida) is the calm middle of the Heraklion resort coast, 32 km east of the airport between Hersonissos and Malia. It has one of the longest and shallowest sandy beaches on the north coast, a single main road of family hotels and tavernas, and the mountain village of Mochos ten minutes uphill for evening meals. The nightlife of Malia is a ten-minute taxi away if you want it, and not audible if you do not.
Stalis is the resort that families from Heraklion choose for their own beach days. The sand runs for about three kilometres, the water stays waist-deep a long way out, and the hotels are mostly low-rise apartments and three-star family places rather than the big blocks of Hersonissos.
The village has one main street parallel to the beach with supermarkets, tavernas, car-hire desks and a handful of bars that close by 1am. There is no strip and no clubs; for those you go to Malia, ten minutes east.
Above the coast the road climbs to Mochos, a mountain village of narrow lanes and a plane-tree square where the tavernas fill every summer evening with visitors who come up from the coast for dinner. It is the reason Stalis feels more Cretan than its neighbours.

- The Heraklion to Malia KTEL bus stops on the Stalis main street every 30 minutes in summer; about 50 minutes to Heraklion.
- A taxi from the airport is €45-55 and takes 35 minutes. Book a transfer for arrivals after midnight.
- A car is useful for two or three days of trips; the rest of the week you can walk everywhere.

Farmland to resort
Until the 1970s Stalis was fields and a few fishermen's huts belonging to the villages of Mochos and Malia. The hotels arrived a decade after Hersonissos, which is why they are smaller.
Mochos
The mountain village above Stalis is recorded in Venetian censuses of the 1500s. Its square, church and kafeneia are still the social centre for the whole slope, and it hosts a sardine festival in August.
The Minoan coast
The palace of Malia, 5 km east, shows this plain was farmed and traded from 4,000 years ago. Finds from the Stalis area are in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
The shallow bay
The bay's gentle slope comes from the sand carried down from the Lasithi mountains by winter streams. It is why the water here stays warm and shallow.

Money, health, manners and what changed this year.
Money
- Apartments behind the main street are the best value on this coast: self-catering with the beach five minutes away.
- Beach taverna meals are €12-18 per person; Mochos is slightly cheaper and the portions are larger.
- Sunbeds are usually free if you eat at the taverna behind them.
Health and safety
- The pharmacy on the main street is open until 9pm in summer; the medical centre in Malia handles emergencies and Heraklion hospital is 40 minutes.
- The shallow water heats up in August; small children still burn under it. Rash vests and hats.
- Afternoon meltemi wind blows straight onto the beach in July and August; mornings are calm.
Local manners
- Mochos is a real village: greet people in the square, and do not photograph inside the kafeneio without asking.
- The August sardine festival in Mochos is a local event; visitors are welcome, tourists in swimwear are not.
- Siesta is observed inland from 2pm to 5pm; shops in Mochos close.

Is Stalis quiet?
Yes. It has no clubs and the bars close around 1am. Malia's nightlife is 2 km east and not audible from Stalis. It is the family choice on this part of the coast.
How far is Stalis from Heraklion airport?
About 32 km, 35 minutes by taxi (€45-55) or 50 minutes by KTEL bus via Heraklion bus station.
Is Stalis beach good for small children?
It is one of the best on the north coast for toddlers: fine sand and water that stays waist-deep for 50 metres or more. Lifeguards are on duty in July and August.
What is Mochos?
The mountain village 10 minutes above Stalis. Its plane-tree square has half a dozen tavernas, live Cretan music on summer weekends and a much cooler evening temperature than the coast. Most Stalis visitors eat there at least once.
Do I need a car in Stalis?
Not for daily life. For Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau and Agios Nikolaos, rent one for two or three days from the desks on the main street.
Stalis or Hersonissos?
Stalis for a calm family beach holiday; Hersonissos for more hotels, more nightlife and water parks on the doorstep. They are 10 minutes apart, so you can use both.
