Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete. It holds two of Greece's most important cultural attractions -- the Palace of Knossos (the largest Minoan palace, 5 km from the city centre) and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (the finest collection of Minoan art in the world). The port is also Crete's main ferry gateway from Athens.
Most visitors rush through Heraklion en route to the beach resorts. That's a mistake. Spend two nights here and you'll discover a city with a genuinely excellent food culture (the best in Crete, many argue), a spectacular market street (1866 Street), a Venetian harbour with a superb fortress and one of the most mind-bending museum collections in the Mediterranean.
Knossos Palace, 5 km south of the city, is the crown jewel. Built by the Minoans around 2000 BC and partially reconstructed by Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20th century, it is the source of the Minotaur myth and the most visited site in Greece after the Athens Acropolis.
Beyond Knossos, the Heraklion wine zone (Peza PDO, Dafnes PDO) produces exceptional Vidiano and Liatiko wines from ancient indigenous varieties. A day touring the wine villages south of the city is among the most underrated experiences on Crete.

The Palace of Knossos was the administrative and ceremonial centre of Minoan civilisation -- Europe's first advanced society, with running water, flushing drains, paved roads and a writing system (Linear A). At its peak, Knossos may have had 100,000 inhabitants.
Arab forces captured Crete and built the fortified settlement of Rabdh al-Khandaq (the city of the moat) -- the origin of the name "Candia". For 137 years this was the main hub of Mediterranean piracy.
Under Venetian rule, Candia became one of the most fortified cities in Europe. The great walls, bastions and the Koules sea fortress date from this era. The 465-year Venetian period also produced the painter El Greco (born in Crete in 1541).
The 21-year siege of Candia by the Ottomans is the longest siege in recorded history. The city finally fell in 1669, but the Venetian cultural imprint remained deep.

The city is anchored by the Venetian walls (still intact for most of their circuit) and the Koules sea fortress at the harbour mouth. Lions Square (Plateia Eleftherias) is the social centre; 1866 Street (the covered market) is the best food shopping in Crete.
Archanes (14 km south of Heraklion) is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved villages in Crete. It has a thriving wine cooperative, a Minoan cemetery at Fourni (one of the richest Minoan burial sites discovered), and excellent traditional tavernas.
Hersonissos (Chersonissos) is the largest and loudest resort in Crete, offering packed beaches, water parks (Aquaworld, Star Beach), nightlife and every international brand. Not for everyone, but families and party travellers know what they're getting.
Zaros sits at the foot of the Psiloritis massif and is famous for its natural springs, a scenic lake, fresh trout restaurants and easy access to the Rouvas Gorge, one of the best day-hikes in Heraklion prefecture.
