01Before you go
While many Greeks in tourist areas speak English, learning a few basic Greek phrases can greatly enhance your travel experience. Locals appreciate the effort, and it can help you navigate more easily, especially in less touristy areas.
Below are the phrases we use most on the islands, each with the Greek script and a pronunciation you can read straight off the page.
Start with hello (Γειά σου, YAH-soo), thank you (Ευχαριστώ, ef-kha-ree-STO) and please (Παρακαλώ, para-ka-LO). They open almost every conversation on the islands.

03Quick lookup
Type an everyday English word or short phrase to see the Greek and how to say it.
This looks up 27 common words and phrases from our phrasebook dictionary. It is a lookup, not a translator.
04Sound it out
In our pronunciation guide, the stressed syllable is indicated with capital letters (e.g., ka-lee-MER-ah).
This is rolled slightly, similar to the Spanish 'r'.
In Greek, this is more like the 'y' in "yes" when it appears before certain vowels.
Read the pronunciation aloud a few times before your trip, leaning on the capitalised syllable. Locals will happily help you with the rest.
05The guide
Planning a trip to the Crete? Learning a few essential Greek phrases will transform your experience. This phrasebook covers 40 phrases in 8 situations, from greetings and restaurant vocabulary to directions and emergencies. Each entry gives the Greek script and a phonetic pronunciation.
