Kolymbari is the coast town west of Chania where the wine country meets the sea, with the monastery of Gonia on the water and vineyards behind. A half-day can hold one cellar and a walk on the front. It is not Balos, which lies much further west, and the road beyond Kolymbari toward Kissamos is a different commitment.
Drive the north-coast road from Chania, about half an hour. The monastery is on the seafront. Cellars are signed inland of the town.
It suits a gentle westbound day from Chania. Skip it if the group will be disappointed not to reach the lagoon. The two do not share an afternoon.
Kolymbari wine and coast needs 4–5 hours from Kolymbari. The months that usually work are April to November. Eat the food the stalls and the kitchen actually sell, and say so if someone in the group will not. Do not add a boat the same afternoon. Kolymbari is the table you came for. Kolymbari wine and coast eats in and around Kolymbari. A tasting in another region is a different cellar and a different table.

Food and wineChania wine tasting
Chania3–4 hours
West Crete wines come from vineyards around Kolymbari, the Akrotiri and the foothills, not from a single famous estate you are obliged to name. A tasting afternoon visits one or two cellars, with bread and oil, and returns you to Chania before dinner. It is not a pub crawl, and it is a bad combination with a long boat the same day. The usual length is 3–4 hours, and the months that usually work are April to November. It suits adults who want a short inland contrast to the harbour. Skip it if anyone does not drink and was not told there would be little else to do at the cellar. Cellars are a short drive from Chania, often toward Kolymbari or the Akrotiri. You need a driver who is not tasting, or a tour that includes the transfer.

Jeep safariApokoronas villages from Kolymbari
Kolymbari4–5 hours
Inland from Kolymbari and Chania, the Apokoronas villages sit among olive groves and small gorges. A jeep or a local driver is useful because the interest is the lanes, not a single car park. You stop for a coffee and a view. You do not “do” the villages in a checklist, and a hire car is a poor tool on the rougher tracks. The usual length is 4–5 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round, spring is green. It suits people who have already had a beach day. It is wasted on a group that wanted a swim and will spend the drive asking when the beach starts. Leave Chania toward Kolymbari and turn inland, or join a driver who knows which tracks are open. Agree the return time before you add a tavern stop.

Boat tripBalos and Gramvousa from Kissamos
Kissamos5–7 hours
From Kissamos harbour the same Gramvousa and Balos route is a shorter day, because you skip the Chania coach. You still stop at the fortress, still walk an uneven path, and still land at a lagoon with almost no shade. The crossing is exposed when the northwest wind is up, and a cancelled morning is a normal part of early summer. The usual length is 5–7 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits people already staying in Kissamos, Falasarna or the far west. It is a poor fit if you need to be back in Chania for lunch, or if anyone in the group cannot manage the path up to the fort. The quay is in Kissamos, also called Kastelli, not in Chania. Confirm the meeting point the evening before, and allow time if you are driving the coast road.
