Things to do in Crete.
Start with the region you are staying in.
The useful version of “things to do in Crete” is a short list from one coast, not 25 stops in seven days. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi each have a walkable town and a handful of days that need a car. Eat a street back from the harbour in Chania and Rethymno. The waterfront tables are the tourist menu.

Chania
Western Crete is the harbour, the gorges and the far beaches. Base in Chania town if you want to walk, and use a car for Elafonissi, Balos and the south coast.
Chania guideWalk Chania old town at sunrise
The Venetian harbour, the lighthouse and the Mosque of the Janissaries are quietest before 08:00. Walk the harbour arc, then have coffee in Splantzia.
Chania guideHike the Samaria Gorge
The gorge is about 18 km and takes 5–7 hours, and it is open roughly May to October. The first morning bus from Chania gets you to the top before the main rush. The walk ends at Agia Roumeli; a boat continues to Chora Sfakion.
Samaria hiking guideSwim at Elafonissi
The shallow pink-sand lagoon is at the southwestern tip. The colour comes from crushed shells. It is about 75 km from Chania by car, with a summer bus as well.
Elafonissi beachBoat to Balos and Gramvousa
Boats from Kissamos combine the Venetian fort on Gramvousa with Balos lagoon. In July and August the boats fill, so book the day before.
Crete beachesFalassarna at sunset
A wide west-facing beach. Bring water and stay for the sun dropping into the sea.
Chania beachesThe Agora market
The 1913 covered market is the place for olive oil, graviera, thyme honey and raki. Tuesday and Thursday have the freshest produce.
Chania food guideSeitan Limania
A narrow turquoise inlet in white cliffs on the Akrotiri peninsula, about 25 km from Chania. The last stretch is a cliff path. There are no facilities, and it is a poor choice in a strong wind.
Things to do in ChaniaA night in Loutro
Loutro, on the south coast, has no road in. You arrive by boat. White houses, one cove, and no cars.

Rethymno
Central Crete is the old town, the Fortezza, Preveli and the quiet Amari valley. Rethymno town is walkable. The beaches and monasteries need a car.
Rethymno guideClimb the Fortezza
The 16th-century Venetian fortress sits on the headland above the harbour. Walk the wall circuit for the view over the old town and the sea.
Rethymno guideWalk the old town
Venetian houses, Ottoman minarets, the lighthouse and the Rimondi Fountain (1626) sit in a few blocks. Allow about two hours.
Things to do in RethymnoPreveli palm beach
A river with native palms runs out of a gorge into the Libyan Sea. You can kayak from Plakias or walk down from Preveli Monastery.
Preveli beach guideArkadi Monastery
A 16th-century monastery and one of the defining sites of the 1866 revolt. The church is worth the drive even if you only have an hour.
Monasteries in CreteDrive the Amari valley
Between the Psiloritis and Kedros mountains: Byzantine chapels, old olives and villages such as Thronos. It is one of the least crowded drives on the island.

Heraklion
Heraklion is the Minoan capital of the trip: Knossos, the archaeological museum, and the road south to Phaistos and Matala. The city itself is on the bus. The south coast is not.
Heraklion guideKnossos
The largest Minoan palace. Allow two hours, and go with a licensed guide if you want the site to make sense. Pair it with the museum the same day.
Knossos guideHeraklion Archaeological Museum
The Minoan collection: the snake goddesses, the Phaistos Disc, the bull-leaping fresco and the gold. Allow two hours.
Heraklion guideWine around Peza and Archanes
The vineyards south of the city grow Vidiano and Kotsifali. Wineries such as Lyrarakis and Douloufakis take visitors when you book ahead. Eat in Archanes afterwards.
Cretan wine guidePhaistos and Matala
Phaistos is the second great Minoan palace, quieter than Knossos, with a view over the Messara plain. Matala’s cave beach is a short drive further south.
Matala guideThe Venetian walls
The 15th-century walls circle the old city for about 4 km. The full walk takes around an hour.

Lasithi
Eastern Crete is Mirabello Bay, Spinalonga, the palm beach at Vai and the far south. Agios Nikolaos or Elounda is the practical base. Sitia and Zakros are a separate day.
Lasithi guideBoat to Spinalonga
The Venetian fortress and former leper colony sits in Mirabello Bay. Boats leave from Elounda and Plaka and take about 10 minutes. Allow two hours on the island.
Elounda guideValley of the Dead to Zakros
An 8 km gorge from Zakros village down to the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros and a small beach. Far fewer people than Samaria.
Things to do in LasithiVai palm beach
A grove of native Cretan palms behind a sandy beach at the eastern tip. May, June and September are the calmer months.
Vai beachToplou Monastery
A fortified monastery north of Sitia, built to hold off pirates. It still produces olive oil and wine.
Monasteries in CreteXerokampos
Three sandy coves on the far south coast, reached by rough tracks from Ziros. There are no facilities.
Lasithi beachesAncient Lato and Kritsa
A Dorian city on a saddle above Kritsa, with a view over Mirabello. Combine it with the frescoes at Panagia Kera.
Lasithi guideAgios Nikolaos at dusk
Walk the harbour as the light goes off the bay, then eat a street back from the waterfront.

FAQ
Questions people ask before they plan the days.
- Start with one region. In Chania that is the old harbour, Samaria or Imbros, and Elafonissi or Balos. In Rethymno it is the Fortezza, Preveli and Arkadi. In Heraklion it is Knossos and the archaeological museum. In Lasithi it is Spinalonga and Vai. Crete is about 250 km from west to east, so do not plan Chania and Sitia on the same day.
- For Knossos, Chania old town, Rethymno old town and the Spinalonga boat, no. For gorges, south-coast beaches, monasteries and villages, yes. Buses link the main towns. They do not reach most of the places on this page at a useful time.
- May, June and September give warm weather without the July and August crowds at Elafonissi, Balos and Samaria. Samaria is a seasonal gorge, roughly May to October. The sea is swimmable from about May to October.
- Yes, if the base matches the day. Elafonissi’s lagoon is shallow. Knossos works with children who like a ruin they can walk through. Long gorge days and cliff paths such as Seitan Limania are a poor fit for small children.
- A week is enough for one region done properly, or a single west-to-east road with long driving days. Two weeks is what it takes to stay in the west and the east without rushing the transfers.
