- Preveli
- Typical duration

- Type
- Sea kayak
A kayak near Preveli follows the south coast where the cliffs drop to a river mouth and a palm-lined beach. You put in close to the sand or a little along the shore, with a guide and a sit-on-top kayak, and you paddle a short stretch of coast rather than a crossing. Three to four hours is the usual length. The south coast is the useful detail: when the north wind is blowing along Chania and Heraklion, this side of the island is often the water that is still paddleable. It is not always flat. A south wind, or a swell wrapping around the cape, will cancel the morning just as firmly. The advantage is statistical, not a guarantee.
What you see is the cliff line, the colour change where the river meets the sea, and a beach that looks different from the water than it does from the path down. Preveli’s palm grove sits just inland of the sand. You are not hiking the gorge on this trip. If the walk through the palms is the thing you wanted, do that on another morning and keep the kayak for the coast itself. The landing, if there is one, is brief. There is little shade on the water and the rock is sharp where you step out. Swim shoes matter more here than they do in a harbour.
The paddle suits people who want a quieter coast than the north and who are happy to get wet. It works well for couples and for confident older children. It is a long way to come from Chania for a three-hour activity, so it fits best if you are already staying in southern Rethymno, Plakias or Agia Galini, or if the kayak is one stop on a day you have given to this shore. Do not bolt it onto a Samaria hike. Both days ask for your legs and your patience with the road, and the south-coast drive is slow even when the paddle was easy.
Is it worth it
It is worth it when the north coast is windy and you are already on the south, or when Preveli is the beach you wanted to see from the sea rather than only from the sand. It is not worth a two-hour transfer from Heraklion for its own sake. Pair it with the palm beach and a slow lunch, and leave the plateau and the gorges for a different date. If the operator moves the put-in because of swell, take the new beach. The cliffs do not improve because you insisted.
What to bring
- Swim shoes for a stony exit at the river mouth
- Sunscreen and a shirt. Shade on this stretch is the cliff, and only sometimes
- A dry bag. Spray is normal even on a calm day
- Water. The beach tavernas are a walk, not a landing
Tips
- Use this coast when the north wind is the forecast, not when every shore is rough.
- The gorge walk and the kayak are two mornings. Do not stack them.
- Ask where you get out of the water. The pretty beach and the easy exit are not always the same place.

FAQ
Questions.
- The south often stays calmer when the summer north wind is up. It is not calm in every forecast. A south swell will still cancel the paddle.
- About three to four hours including the briefing. The paddle itself is a short stretch of coast, not a crossing to another town.
- No. This is a paddle on the sea by the river mouth and the cliffs. The path through the palms is a separate walk you can do on another part of the day if you have the time and the energy.
- Yes. The boats are sit-on-tops and the guide stays with the group. You should be happy getting wet and stepping onto rock. Tell them if anyone cannot swim.
- Only if the drive is already part of your day. From either city the transfer can be longer than the paddle. It suits people staying on the south coast, or a day you have already given to Preveli.
