Spili is the village on the road south of Rethymno, known for a row of lion-head fountains and a main street of shops and cafes. The stop is short unless you eat. It is a natural pause on the way to the south coast, and a thin destination if the fountains are all you do. Walk the upper lanes. They are the village. The parking street is the shop window.
Spili is on the main road from Rethymno toward Agia Galini. Park at the edge and walk to the fountains. The south-coast beaches are still a drive beyond.
It suits a break in a southbound day. Do not turn the car around after ten minutes and call it a villages tour.
Spili village and the fountains needs 3–4 hours from Rethymno. The months that usually work are year round. The distance is short and the ground can be marble, stone or a harbour kerb. Summer evenings are crowded on the front and quieter one street back. Do it on foot from Rethymno rather than as a coach excursion. Spili village and the fountains stays on foot in Rethymno. It is not a coach loop and it is not another town’s old quarter.
Is it worth it
Spili village and the fountains is worth the hours from Rethymno when it suits a break in a southbound day. The stop is short unless you eat. If that is the part your group will fight, leave it for another date.

Gorge hikeKourtaliotiko gorge and Preveli
Rethymno5–7 hours
Kourtaliotiko is the dramatic road gorge south of Rethymno, with a short walk to a waterfall lookout, and Preveli is the palm beach at the river mouth below. Doing both is a coherent day because they share the same valley. The beach is a steep path down and a hotter path up. The gorge stop is brief. Neither is Samaria. The usual length is 5–7 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits a south-coast day from Rethymno. Skip the beach path with a buggy or with anyone who will struggle back up in the heat. The lookout alone is the easier version. Drive the Spili road south from Rethymno. The gorge car park comes first. Preveli beach is a separate turning toward the coast. Leave time for the climb.

Food and wineWine tasting inland of Rethymno
Rethymno3–5 hours
The hills south of Rethymno grow wine, and a tasting afternoon is one cellar, some bread and oil, and a view, not a crawl of six wineries. Spili or the villages toward the Amari valley are the direction. You need a driver who is not drinking. Combining the tasting with Arkadi can work. Combining it with a gorge hike does not. The usual length is 3–5 hours, and the months that usually work are April to November. It suits adults who want a short inland contrast. Skip it for non-drinkers unless the visit is honestly about the village and the oil as well. Leave Rethymno south toward Spili. The drive is part of the pleasure if you are not late for something else. Tours should name the village, not only “wine country”.

Day tripPreveli palm beach
Plakias4–6 hours
Preveli beach is the palm-backed shore where the Kourtaliotiko river meets the south coast. From Plakias it is a shorter approach than from Rethymno town. You still walk down to the sand and back up, unless you arrive by boat. The palms are real. The shade under them is limited once the beach fills. Fire has scarred the grove in living memory, so the photograph in your head may be fuller than the trees. The usual length is 4–6 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits swimmers who can handle the path or the boat. It is a poor midday choice for anyone who cannot climb out. Go earlier than the August coaches. From Plakias, drive toward Preveli or take a small boat along the coast. From Rethymno, the gorge road is the usual approach. Confirm the path is open.
