03Where to start
Start with these three.
The four regionsChania.
Chania, the jewel of western Crete, is a captivating blend of Venetian charm, Ottoman history, and modern Greek life. The centerpiece is the old Venetian harbor, with its iconic 16th-century lighthouse, colorful waterfront buildings, and narrow stone alleyways filled with artisanal shops and traditional tavernas. Beyond the historic town, the Chania prefecture boasts some of the most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean, including the pink sands of Elafonisi, the wild lagoon of Balos, and the wide sands of Falassarna. The region is also a paradise for nature lovers, home to the Samaria Gorge, Europe's longest gorge, which offers a demanding 16 km trek down to the Libyan Sea. From the bustling market hall to quiet mountain villages like Theriso, Chania preserves a rich cultural identity, warm Cretan hospitality, and a legendary food culture centered around wild herbs, olive oil, and local cheeses.

The four regionsRethymno.
Rethymno is Crete's best-kept secret, featuring one of the most well-preserved Venetian-Ottoman old towns in Greece. Narrow stone alleys, elegant wooden balconies, Ottoman minarets, and grand Venetian portals create a fairytale-like atmosphere. The massive Fortezza castle sits on Paleokastro hill, overlooking the town and the Cretan sea. To the south, the Rethymno prefecture unfolds into rugged peaks, traditional villages like Spili with its lion-head fountains, and pristine beaches like Preveli, where a palm forest surrounds a river meeting the sea. Rethymno is also a cultural hub, famous for its Renaissance Festival, local wines, and authentic Cretan gastronomy, making it a peaceful and romantic base for exploring the island.

The four regionsHeraklion.
Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, is the economic and cultural gateway to the island. It is a city defined by layers of history: Venetian walls, Ottoman architecture, busy central markets, and a modern harbor. The ultimate highlight is the legendary Palace of Knossos, the center of the ancient Minoan Civilization, where myths of the Minotaur and Labyrinth come alive. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses the world's finest collection of Minoan art and artifacts. The prefecture extends from city life to the famous wine regions of Archanes and Peza, the dramatic Mount Psiloritis, and down to the bohemian caves of Matala beach, making Heraklion a diverse destination for history, gastronomy, and adventure.

FAQ
Crete travel guides FAQ.
Common questions about planning your Greek island trip
- Chania and Rethymno combine old towns and western beaches. Heraklion suits Knossos and museums; Lasithi offers Mirabello Bay and a quieter east.
- Allow a week for one or two regions. Ten to fourteen days gives more time for a journey across the island. Account for slower mountain roads.
- Compare flights to Chania and Heraklion, or ferries from Piraeus to Heraklion and Souda. Check live schedules for your dates.
- Spring and autumn suit walking and sightseeing. Summer is the busiest beach season. Check gorge opening dates and local conditions before setting out.
