Day trip
Day tripSeitan Limania cove visit
Chania3–4 hours
Seitan Limania is a narrow cove on the Akrotiri peninsula, reached by a steep stair from a small car park. The water is clear when the wind is down and rough when the north wind is up. There is little sand, no shade on the stair, and the car park is small. The visit is the cove itself, not a boat and not a long hike. The usual length is 3–4 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits confident walkers who want a swim close to Chania. Skip it with a buggy, with anyone unsteady on stairs, or on a day when the meltemi is already on the north coast. Drive the Akrotiri road from Chania toward the cove car park, then walk down. A kayak morning is the other way in, and it runs only when the bay is calm.

Day tripStavros and the Akrotiri coast
Chania3–5 hours
Stavros is the sandy cove at the north end of the Akrotiri peninsula, with a hill behind the beach and a short drive from Chania. It is an easy swim compared with Seitan’s stair. The peninsula also holds the monasteries of Agia Triada and Gouverneto, which can share a morning if you do not try to add a boat as well. The usual length is 3–5 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits a half-day from Chania when you want a beach without a peninsula crossing. It is not a substitute for Balos, and the hill walk is optional rather than the point. Drive or join a short trip across the Akrotiri neck. The beach road ends at Stavros. Monastery visitors need shoulders covered.

Day tripElafonisi day from Chania
Chania8–10 hours
Elafonisi from Chania is a long road day to the shallow lagoon at the southwest corner. The beach is the reason. The drive through the west is most of the hours. Coaches and drivers both face the same narrow last kilometres and the same full car park in August. A swim is easy. A rushed photo stop is a waste of the drive. The usual length is 8–10 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits people who want this beach and can give it the day. Do not pair it with Balos. The two peninsulas lie in opposite directions, and doing both means two short swims and a day in the car. Leave Chania early by coach or car, via the west-coast or inland road. The last stretch is slow. Bring shade. The lagoon is bright and open.

Day tripE-bike loop from Chania
Chania3–4 hours
An e-bike loop from Chania uses the flat coast or the edges of the old town rather than the gorge roads. The motor helps on the small rises. You still need to steer, to deal with traffic near the harbour, and to wear a helmet. It is a good way to reach a beach a few kilometres out and a bad way to “see the west” in a morning. The usual length is 3–4 hours, and the months that usually work are March to November. It suits adults who are fine on a bike in light traffic. Skip it in the heat of an August afternoon, and do not plan the Akrotiri hills unless the operator describes that route in words you believe. Bikes are picked up in or near Chania. A guided loop is easier than a rental if you do not know which roads are gravel.
