Cretaquarium sits at Gournes, on the coast east of Heraklion, in the old American base above a long sandy shore. A visit is the indoor half of a short family day: Mediterranean tanks, a slow walk in the cool, and then the beach below if the group still has the energy. Three to four hours covers the aquarium and a pause outside. It does not cover a tour of Heraklion as well. The point of choosing this over a gorge is the roof and the air. In July and August a midday hike is a punishment. A tank hall and a swim is a plan people can finish in a good mood.
You get there by car or by a short tour from the city. The coast road is straightforward, which is why this works as a half-day rather than an expedition. Inside, you walk a single circuit. There is no need to rush, and there is also no hidden second museum you are missing if you leave after an hour. Children who like to stand still in front of one tank will set the pace. Adults who wanted ruins will be finished sooner and should have brought a book or a willingness to sit on the sand. The beach beside the site is the second half. It is a working public shore, not a lagoon. Umbrellas, a taverna and a car park matter more here than a photograph.
The day suits families, anyone travelling with someone who cannot do steps, and visitors who have already had their archaeological morning and want an easy afternoon. It is a weak choice if your whole reason for being in Crete is the outdoors and the weather is kind. In that case take the coast for a swim and skip the ticket. It is also the wrong add-on to a Knossos morning unless you are genuinely fine with two stops. Knossos plus the aquarium is a full day, not a light one, and the drive between them is the part people forget when they look at a map of Heraklion.
Is it worth it
It is worth it on a hot day, with children, or when someone in the group needs a plan that happens in the cool. It is not worth it as a “must” beside the palace and the museum. Those two already fill a Heraklion stay. Use the aquarium when the alternative was a forced hike or a hotel room. Go early enough that the beach afterwards is still pleasant, and leave the evening for the city rather than a third sight.
What to bring
- A light layer. The halls are cooler than the car park
- Swim things if you intend to use the beach below, and a bag that can take wet clothes
- Patience for a single circuit. The pleasure is watching one tank, not collecting rooms
- Water for the car. The coast road is short and still hot
Tips
- Treat it as the hot-day plan, not as a warm-up for a gorge.
- If you are also doing Knossos, give each one its own half-day.
- The beach is part of the visit only if you want it. The aquarium stands on its own.

FAQ
Questions.
- At Gournes, on the coast east of Heraklion, above a sandy shore. It is a short drive from the city and from the airport, which is why it works as a half-day rather than a journey.
- Most families are through the circuit in a bit over an hour. Allow three to four hours if you add the beach and the drive. There is no second site on the same ticket that you are obliged to see.
- Yes. It is cool, flat enough for a buggy on the main route, and finished before anyone has to hike. It is a better hot-day plan than a gorge or a long boat.
- Only as a full day, and only if the group is willing. The palace and the aquarium are both near Heraklion and they are still two separate visits. One in the morning and one after lunch is the version that does not sour.
- No. The shore below Gournes is a public beach. Bring what you need for a swim if you want one. You can also leave after the tanks and be back in Heraklion for lunch.
