Cretaquarium sits at Gournes, east of Heraklion, above a sandy shore. The visit is one indoor circuit of Mediterranean tanks, then the beach if anyone still wants it. It is the hot-day plan when a gorge is too much. It is not a second museum you are obliged to add to Knossos. Those two together are a full day, and the drive between them is the part people forget. Amoudara beach from Heraklion

Amoudara is the long sandy beach immediately west of Heraklion, a city beach with umbrellas, tavernas and an easy bus. It is not a secret cove. It is where you swim when you are based in the city and do not want a project. The water is shallower and less clear than a south-coast cove, and the facilities are the reason families use it. The usual length is 2–4 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits a simple swim. Do not cross the island to reach it. If you are already in Matala or Chania, you have better sand closer to you. City buses and a short taxi run from Heraklion centre. The beach is one strip. Walk until you find space rather than hunting a hidden bay.
