Plaka is the small settlement looking straight at Spinalonga. A visit without the island is still a walk, a table, and the best land view of the fortress walls. It is not a town with hours of sights. People combine it with the short boat, which is the sensible version. The channel can be rough even when Elounda harbour looks calm. Parking is limited once the boats are running.
Drive the shore road from Elounda. The quay is at the end of the village. If you are also taking the boat, park once and walk.
It suits a slow afternoon or the start of a fortress trip. Skip it as a standalone excursion from Heraklion. The drive is too long for a coffee.

Boat tripSpinalonga boat from Plaka
Elounda2–4 hours
Plaka is the fishing village facing Spinalonga, and the boat from its quay is the shortest public crossing. You spend the saved hour on the island, not on a coach. The fortress visit is the same uneven lanes and the same lack of shade. The village itself is a handful of rooms and tables, which makes it a good place to start and a poor place to kill a cancelled morning if you have no car. The usual length is 2–4 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits people who can reach Plaka and want the least time on the water. Skip it if the group is based in Agios Nikolaos without a way to Plaka. Use the longer boat from there instead. Drive or take a short transfer from Elounda to the Plaka quay. The island is in front of you.

Town walkElounda village and harbour walk
Elounda1–2 hours
Elounda’s walk is the harbour, the fishing boats, and the short street behind them. The village is small. The interest is the working quay and the view toward Spinalonga, not a medieval quarter. Resort hotels sit along the bay and are a different walk, hotter and longer, with less to see between gates. Evenings are the right hour. Midday in August is a glare off the water. The usual length is 1–2 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits an arrival evening. It is not a hike and it will not fill a day. Pair it with the canal or a boat, not with a list of monuments. Park once in the village and stay on foot. The harbour road is narrow when the boats are loading.

HistoryAncient Olous at low water
Elounda2–3 hours
Olous is the sunken ancient city between Elounda and the Spinalonga peninsula. The visible part for most visitors is the causeway and the shallows, plus a church on the far side, not a fenced palace. Wind and water level change how far you walk. It is a short, flat outing and a good companion to a later boat, not a rival to Knossos. There is little shade on the path. The usual length is 2–3 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round, the causeway is a tide and wind walk. It suits a morning walk from Elounda. Skip it in a strong north wind, when the causeway is unpleasant, or if you needed reconstructed halls. Walk or drive the short road from Elounda toward the peninsula. The path starts near the canal. Stay on the track. The shallows are not a swimming pool.
