Spinalonga is a fortified islet in the Gulf of Elounda, and the boat that takes you there is a short crossing rather than a sea voyage. From the little harbour at Plaka or from Elounda itself you are on the water for a few minutes. From Agios Nikolaos the ride is longer and still nothing like a Balos day. The visit on the island is a walk of about an hour through the Venetian walls, the later buildings, and the lanes of the old leper colony. There is shade in places and very little of it at midday. You do not swim from the island as part of the standard stop. The water you see is the gulf, and the swim, if you want one, belongs to a beach before or after, not to the ticketed path.
Three to five hours is the right allowance once you include getting to the boat. That is the part people misjudge. If you are staying in Elounda, this is an easy half-day and one of the best-scaled outings in the east. If you are starting in Heraklion, the drive each way can be longer than the visit, and the day becomes a transfer with a walk in the middle. From Chania it is a poor use of a single date. The boats run through the warm months and more often than the exposed west-coast sailings, because the gulf is sheltered. They still pause for weather and for the site’s own hours. Go in the morning if you can. The path is hotter and more crowded after lunch, and the light on the walls is kinder early.
The trip suits almost anyone who can walk slowly for an hour on uneven stone, including older visitors who would not consider a gorge. It is a bad fit if someone cannot manage steps and rough ground, and it is thin entertainment for small children who needed a beach. Read it as a place with a hard history, not as a pretty stop on a cruise. The colony is the story of the island in the twentieth century, and the walls are older than that. You do not need a guide to walk the lanes, but a guide who will tell you what you are looking at changes the hour from a hot circuit into a visit. Decide which version you are booking.
Where you start
From Elounda
The closest public start. The crossing is a few minutes and the visit is the walk on the islet. Allow three to five hours once you include getting to the boat. This is the version that still feels like a half-day.
From Agios Nikolaos
Same fortress, longer ride across the gulf, about five to seven hours with the transfer. You are not adding a second island. You are adding water time before the same one-hour walk.
From Plaka
Plaka sits on the channel opposite the walls, so this is the shortest boat, often two to four hours. The path on the island is the same uneven stone. The village view is not a substitute for landing.
Is it worth it
It is worth it when you are already in Elounda or Agios Nikolaos, and when an hour on a fortified islet is the day you wanted. It is not worth a cross-island coach from Chania. It is also not a substitute for a beach day. Pair it with a swim at a gulf beach if the group needs both, and keep the island walk unhurried. If you only have one morning in the east, Spinalonga is the specific sight. The plateau and the cave are the other specific sight, and they do not share this morning well.
What to bring
- A hat and water. The lanes trap the heat even when the gulf looks cool
- Shoes with a grip. The stone is polished and uneven
- The morning slot if you want space on the path
- Time for the drive, written down, if you are not sleeping in Elounda
Tips
- Stay in the east and this is a short trip. Start in the west and it is a long one.
- The crossing is the easy part. The walk and the transfer are the day.
- A guided hour is worth it if you want the history. The walls alone are a shorter pleasure.

FAQ
Questions.
- The shortest crossings leave from Plaka and Elounda. Boats also run from Agios Nikolaos. The island is the same. The difference is how long you sit on the boat and how far you drove to reach it.
- About an hour on the island, plus the crossing. Allow three to five hours once you include getting to the quay, more if you are driving from Heraklion. It is not a full-day voyage.
- The standard visit is a walk inside the walls, not a beach. Swim before or after at a beach on the gulf. Do not plan the islet itself as the swimming stop.
- Older visitors who can walk uneven stone for an hour often find it manageable, because there is no gorge and no long sail. Small children who wanted a beach will be bored. Ask for step-free access before you assume the path allows it. Much of it does not.
- Not for this alone. The drive from the west is the day. Come if you are moving east anyway, or stay a night in Elounda and make the boat a short morning.
