Zaros is the village on the southern flank of Psiloritis, with a short gorge walk, springs, and a lake nearby. The Rouvas path climbs into woodland and is a different scale from Samaria. You can make it a serious hike or a village day with a short walk. Say which you are doing. The springs are why the place is green. The beach is not part of this day.
Drive from Heraklion to Zaros, about an hour. The gorge path starts above the village. A guide helps if you want the longer Rouvas route rather than the first viewpoint.
It suits walkers based in Heraklion who want mountains without the Samaria coach. Skip the long version in July if you are not fit. The short village version is still a good lunch.
Zaros and the Rouvas gorge needs 5–7 hours from Heraklion. The months that usually work are April to November. The stones are the walk, so wear shoes you have already used and carry more water than a town morning needs. Rain and a closed gate change the plan. Have a shorter walk in mind before you leave Heraklion. Zaros and the Rouvas gorge is this gorge, with this start in Heraklion. A shorter or longer gorge nearby is a different walk.

Day tripPsiloritis day from the north
Rethymno7–9 hours
Psiloritis is the high mountain between Rethymno and Heraklion. A guided day is not the same as wandering up from a café. Routes vary from a high shepherd path to a long summit attempt. Weather changes quickly and the top can be in cloud while the beach is hot. This is a mountain day. Boots, water and an early start are the product, not a viewpoint pull-off. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits fit walkers who want a mountain rather than a gorge. Skip it in thunderstorm forecasts, in midsummer heat without experience, and with anyone who thought it was a monastery visit. Guides collect from Anogia, Zaros or the north-coast towns depending on the route. Ask which route, how many metres of climbing, and what happens if the cloud is down.

Food and wineWine tasting in the Heraklion hills
Heraklion4–6 hours
South of Heraklion, around Peza, Archanes and the foothills, are the vineyards most visitors can reach in an afternoon. A good tasting is one or two cellars, bread and oil, and a village, not a race. The drive is short. The mistake is adding Knossos, a beach and three wineries. You need a sober driver. The wine country is real agricultural land, not a theme park. The usual length is 4–6 hours, and the months that usually work are April to November. It suits adults who want the inland half of Heraklion. Skip it for a group that does not drink and was not offered another reason to be there. Archanes and Peza are a short drive south of the city. Tours should name the area. “Crete wine” alone can mean a shop in a resort.

Gorge hikeSamaria Gorge from Heraklion
Heraklion12–14 hours
Samaria from Heraklion is the same gorge plus the longest coach of the three city starts. You cross most of the island before you take a step, and you cross it again after the boat. The hike is unchanged and the day is not. People book it because they are sleeping in Heraklion. The honest version is to sleep closer to Omalos, or to pick Imbros or a closer walk. The usual length is 12–14 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October, when the park is open. It suits only walkers who accept a very long day and an early start. Skip it with children, with anyone who tires on stairs, or if this is your only full day in Crete. The gorge will be the smallest part of the memory. The coach leaves Heraklion long before the park gate.
