- Type
- Gorge hike
Agia Irini gorge is in the Selino area of the White Mountains, with the inland entrance by the village of the same name. From a Paleochora or Sougia base, plan the road transfer to the chosen entrance and the journey from the exit separately. A boat to Sougia does not itself return you to the inland trailhead.
Confirm the actual entrance and exit, current trail access and the road transfer for each end. Check any separate ferry independently.
Is it worth it
Choose the gorge for a walk whose actual difficulty and access fit the group. Arrange both ends before starting, especially when your accommodation is in a different south-coast village.
What to bring
- Worn-in walking shoes, water and sun protection.

Paleochora and Sougia are linked within ANENDYK’s published coastal network. Compare a ferry visit to Sougia with transport after an Agia Irini walk: the gorge outlet is inland, so that version also needs a journey to the harbour. Check both directions for your date rather than assuming an evening return follows every outward sailing. Choose this link for a planned visit or onward journey in Sougia. Walkers should account for their own pace and the inland-to-harbour leg before relying on a particular sailing. Check Paleochora–Sougia and Sougia–Paleochora separately on the operator’s dated table. If arriving after Agia Irini, allow for the additional journey from the inland exit to the boarding quay.

HistoryLissos ancient site from Sougia
PaleochoraCheck route and total travel time
Lissos is an archaeological destination on Chania’s south coast. The regional guide describes access from Sougia on foot or by boat; these require different return arrangements. Compare the walking approach with a specifically confirmed landing rather than assuming a regular ferry calls at the site. Include the site visit and return walk in your own route plan. This combines archaeology with an approach that needs its own planning. Ask about the site’s terrain as well as the journey there; a boat does not establish access to every ruin. Confirm the current Lissos walking approach from Sougia and the return route. If requesting a boat, verify an actual landing and collection agreement rather than using the inter-village ferry as a substitute.
