A private west-coast day from Chania is one big beach with a driver, either Balos or Elafonissi, and then back. The two peninsulas point in opposite directions. Balos is north of Kissamos, at the end of a narrow road and a steep path. Elafonissi is southwest, a longer drive through the countryside to a lagoon you can usually walk onto. Doing both is a day of roads with two short swims and a late return to town. A driver who lets you book both without an argument is not doing you a favour. Pick the one that matches the group, and leave the other for another date or for a boat.
Choose Balos with a driver when you want the lagoon and you do not want the boat, and when everyone can walk the path down and back up. The car stops above the beach. The last stretch is on foot, in the sun, with little shade. Gramvousa, the fortress island, is not included. If the fortress is half the reason, take the boat from Kissamos and skip the private car. Choose Elafonissi when you want a long sandy shallows, an easier arrival, and a beach that suits children better than a cliff path. The drive is the tiring part, not the sand. Seven to nine hours from a Chania hotel is normal for either, and most of that is the road.
The day suits people who want one west-coast beach done properly and would rather not drive the last kilometres themselves. It suits families better at Elafonissi than at Balos. It is a poor use of a private car if you are a confident driver with time to go slowly, because the route is not complicated so much as long. It is also the wrong booking if someone in the group cannot manage heat and stairs and you have chosen Balos anyway. Say which beach you want when you enquire. “West Crete highlights” is how both beaches end up on the same sheet, and then nobody swims for long.
Is it worth it
It is worth it for one beach, with the other name crossed out before you leave the hotel. Balos by car is worth it when the path is acceptable and you do not need Gramvousa. Elafonissi by car is worth it when the lagoon and an easier day are the goal. Neither is worth it as a quick add-on to the old town. If the wind is up at Balos, ask the driver to switch to Elafonissi or to a nearer cove rather than forcing the cape. The road does not get kinder because the view was the plan.
What to bring
- The decision, made the night before: Balos or Elafonissi, not both
- Shoes for the Balos path if that is the beach. Sandals are miserable on the way up
- More water than a town day. Services at the end of either road are limited
- A realistic return time. Chania dinner reservations and this day argue with each other
Tips
- If Gramvousa matters, book the boat. The private car does not reach the fortress.
- Elafonissi is the family version. Balos is the path version.
- Ask what the driver does if the Balos road is congested. “We will see” is not a plan.

FAQ
Questions.
- It can drive to both, and it should not. They lie in opposite directions from Chania. You spend the day in the car and swim twice, briefly. Pick one.
- The car reaches the car park above Balos and includes the steep path. It does not include Gramvousa. The boat includes the fortress and the lagoon and skips the path. Choose on that difference, not on a photo.
- Seven to nine hours from Chania is typical, and most of it is the drive. Kissamos is closer to Balos if you are sleeping there. Do not attempt either as a morning bolt-on from Rethymno.
- Elafonissi. The arrival is easier and the water stays shallow. Balos adds a steep walk in the sun, which is hard with small children and worse on the way back up.
- The lagoon can be unpleasant in a north wind even when the road is open. A useful driver will offer Elafonissi or a nearer cove. Forcing the cape on a rough day wastes the booking.
