Where should I stay for a first trip to Crete?
Start with the places you most want to see. Chania works for the western coast; Rethymno combines an old town with beach time; Heraklion gives access to Knossos and the city’s museums; Lasithi is a useful starting point for the east. Choose one area for a shorter trip rather than driving across the island every day.
How many days should I allow?
A week gives you time to explore one side of Crete without rushing. For a longer west-to-east trip, split the stay between two or more bases. Build the route around realistic driving days and leave space for a change of plans.
Do I need to hire a car?
A car gives more flexibility for villages and rural beaches. A car-free trip can work with a town base, buses and organised excursions. Check the route and current timetable for each day trip before choosing your accommodation.
Should I arrive in Chania or Heraklion?
