Private tourPrivate boat from Chania harbour
Chania3–5 hours
A private boat from Chania is a few hours along the coast you choose, not a scheduled Balos sailing. The old harbour is a sheltered start. How far you get depends on the wind and on the hours you booked. A morning can reach a cove for a swim. It will not comfortably add Gramvousa and a return before lunch. The usual length is 3–5 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits a small group that wants its own timing and is willing to let the skipper refuse a route. It is poor value if you actually wanted the fortress and the lagoon, which are a different day from Kissamos. Meet at Chania old harbour. Agree the hours and the direction, west or Akrotiri, before you leave the quay.

Private tourPrivate driver to Balos or Elafonisi
Chania7–9 hours
A private west-coast day from Chania is one beach with a driver, either Balos or Elafonisi, and then back. The peninsulas point in opposite directions. Balos ends in a steep path and does not include Gramvousa. Elafonisi is a longer drive to an easier lagoon. Doing both is a day of roads and two short swims. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits a group that wants one beach done properly and would rather not drive the last kilometres. Elafonisi is the family version. Balos is the path version. Say which one before you get in the car. The driver collects from Chania. If the Balos wind is up, a useful driver offers Elafonisi or a nearer cove instead of forcing the cape.

Private tourPrivate driver for a Chania day
Chania7–9 hours
A private day from Chania is a car and a driver for one date, edited down to what actually fits. A village, a viewpoint and one beach is a full day. A gorge, a winery and Balos is a day of driving. The value is the person who will say so. The north-coast road looks faster on a map than it feels in August. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits groups who do not want to drive and who can name the one stop that matters. It is poor value if you already have a hire car and a short list of places near each other. Start from your Chania hotel. Agree the return time and the stop you would drop. Lunch is not included in the hours just because you are in the car.

Private tourPrivate boat from Rethymno
Rethymno3–5 hours
A private boat from Rethymno is a few hours along the town coast or toward the west, with the skipper setting what the wind allows. It is not a scheduled gorge-beach landing and it will not reach the south coast. Swim stops are coves within a sensible return. Agree the hours before you leave, because “a quick extra bay” is how the evening disappears. The usual length is 3–5 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits a small group that wants its own clock. It is poor value if the real aim was Preveli or Balos, which are road days or different boats. Meet at Rethymno harbour. Say whether you want a swim or a sunset pass, and accept a shorter route if the wind is on the beam.

Private tourPrivate driver from Rethymno
Rethymno7–9 hours
A private day from Rethymno can hold the south coast or the inland villages, not both at a human pace. Preveli and a village lunch is a day. Preveli, Arkadi, a winery and a beach is a day in the car. The driver who crosses stops off your list is the one you want. The one who agrees to everything is selling kilometres. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits groups who should not drive the gorge road. It is unnecessary if you have a hire car and a single, simple destination. Start at your Rethymno hotel. Name the one place that matters and the time you must be back. Let the driver refuse the rest.

Private tourPrivate driver from Heraklion
Heraklion7–9 hours
A private day from Heraklion can be the palace and a winery, or the south coast, or the Lasithi plateau. It cannot be all three. The city sits in the middle of the island and that fact fools people with maps. A driver who cuts your list is doing the job. The airport road and the Knossos traffic are the morning friction. Build them into the hours. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits first days, groups who should not drive, and anyone with a specific site and a firm return. It is unnecessary for a simple city beach. Start from Heraklion or the resort east of it. Name the one region. Lasithi, the Messara and the palace are three different days.

Private tourPrivate driver from Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos7–9 hours
A private day from Agios Nikolaos can be the plateau, or Vai and a monastery, or a slow gulf of villages. It cannot be all three. The east looks compact on a map and the roads are not. A driver who cuts the list is doing the job. Spinalonga still needs a boat, which a car cannot replace. Build the boat as its own date or accept that the car waits. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits groups who should not drive and who can name the one region that matters. It is unnecessary for a harbour evening you could walk. Start from Agios Nikolaos or Elounda. Agree the return time before you climb to the plateau. Lunch is not free time just because the car is parked.

Private tourPrivate boat from Elounda
Elounda3–5 hours
A private boat from Elounda is a few hours in the gulf with a skipper, not a scheduled Spinalonga sailing. You can ask for a swim cove, a pass by the fortress, or a slower look at the channel. How far you get depends on the wind and the hours you booked. Landing on Spinalonga still follows the island’s rules and is not a private beach. The skipper who refuses a route is the one to keep. The usual length is 3–5 hours, and the months that usually work are May to October. It suits a small group that wants its own timing. It is poor value if you only needed the public fortress boat, which is shorter and simpler. Meet at Elounda harbour. Agree the hours and whether a fortress landing is even possible that day before you leave the quay.

Private tourPrivate driver from Elounda
Elounda7–9 hours
A private car day from Elounda is one direction: the plateau, or Sitia and Vai, or a string of gulf villages. The east coast is longer than a glance at the map suggests, and Vai plus the cave plus a boat is three days wearing a single date. The value is a driver who will say so. Spinalonga remains a boat. The usual length is 7–9 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits groups who do not want to drive the mountain roads. It is unnecessary for Olous and the harbour, which are a walk. Start in Elounda. Name the one region and the hour you need to be back. The airport is not next door if someone has an evening flight.

Private tourPrivate driver from Sitia
Sitia7–8 hours
A private day from Sitia is the right way to see Vai, Toplou and a village without rushing a hire car onto unfamiliar roads. It is still one direction. The gorge and the palm beach and a winery do not fit. The east is empty enough that a driver earns the fare by knowing which road is narrow and which beach is out of the wind. You will not be in a convoy. The usual length is 7–8 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits travellers who do not want to drive the far east. It is unnecessary for a harbour evening in town. Start in Sitia. Name Vai or Zakros, not both, unless you have asked and been told the hours truly work.

Private tourPrivate driver from Ierapetra
Ierapetra7–8 hours
A private day from Ierapetra can be the south-east beaches and Kapsa, or a crossing toward Sitia and Vai, or the town and Myrtos at a human pace. It cannot be Chrissi as well, because Chrissi is a boat with its own clock. The value of the driver is the narrow roads and the honest edit. The south coast looks like a straight line and drives like a series of villages. The usual length is 7–8 hours, and the months that usually work are Year round. It suits travellers who do not want to drive. It is unnecessary for the fortress and the market, which are a walk. Start in Ierapetra. Choose the east beaches or the inland road, and say so before the car arrives.

Private tourPrivate boat toward Chrissi
Ierapetra5–7 hours
A private boat toward Chrissi is the same island and the same open crossing as the day boat, with your own timing and a skipper who can refuse the weather. It does not make the sea calmer. It can make the hours on the island fit a smaller group, and it costs more for that reason alone. Landing rules are the island’s, not the charter’s. If the skipper says the south wind is wrong, the public boat is also staying in port. The usual length is 5–7 hours, and the months that usually work are May to September. It suits a small group that wants the island without the day-boat schedule. It is poor value if the public boat already matches the day you wanted. Arrange the quay in Ierapetra the day before. Agree the latest return. The crossing is the risk, not the sand.

What to know before you book
What you are paying for
A driver, and usually a guide, for your group only. The day can start at your hotel. You can spend longer at the place that is working and drop the place that is not. You do not magically fit two peninsulas into one day.
Days that suit it
West: Balos or Elafonissi, not both, with a village stop. Around Heraklion: Knossos and the museum on your own clock. East: Spinalonga plus a swim, if you are not already staying in Elounda.
Best season
The same seasons as the sights. A private boat still cannot land in a gale, and Samaria still closes. The advantage in August is starting earlier than a coach.
How to choose
Send the stops before you pay, and ask what they would cut. A driver who agrees to Balos, Elafonissi and Samaria in one day is not doing you a favour. Compare that quote with a shared boat if you are only two people.
FAQ
Questions.
- Usually not. It starts to make sense for a family or a group that would have bought several coach seats, or when the shared tour does not go where you are staying.
- Yes, that is the point. Agree the swim stop and the latest return when you book, especially on a flight day.
- Yes. The cards on this page open GetYourGuide search results for private Crete days. Price and cancellation stay on that site.
